11/13 Paris Terror Attacks

At least 18 are dead after a series of explosions and shootings. There have been at least 4 separate, but coordinated incidents.

CNN also just announced that there are also 60 hostages being held in a theater.

Update: More than 128 dead. We got a new rating. Basically, everything went fucky.

If I am correct (and I hope so), two of the terrorists have been killed.
French media has confirmed 3 are dead (1 killed, 2 suicides) but other sources are claiming 4 or 5, but those have yet to be confirmed.
@Too Many Crooks Total death toll is 158, 118 were at the theatere, 40 elsewhere.

I'm impressed at how calm the people at the soccer match remained, even though they could hear the blasts from outside the stadium. There were tens of thousands of people in there - if they had panicked, things could easily have turned out way, way uglier than they already did.

I suspect the reasoning behind the lack of pointing fingers is to A) prevent vigilante justice and B) keep possible perpetrators off their toes. It's very likely they have an idea of who did it but won't say anything to keep them from fleeing or increasing defense. It's pretty common practice with this sort of thing.

Stupid American here, but is that like saying the Amish did it? Don't know how strong Basque feeling is.

The ETA has been known to engage in terrorism in pretty much every country in Western Europe at one time or another.

Pretty sure the suggestion is a joke, though.

I also read that hostages in the concert hall were being executed one after the other before the police freed the survivors.

Oh my God, can you even imagine what those people went through?? Imagine being in that theatre, forced to watch as your fellow audience members are executed one by one and knowing that you're next. Maybe you were even unfortunate enough to lose a friend or family member before the police rescued you. This is the stuff of nightmares.

I'm just praying that some good comes out of this. Maybe some new policies will be put in place. I can't imagine 150+ people being slaughtered won't result in some kind of social reform.

The main question being what form "social reform" will take. Ferdinand being shot was an even smaller occasion.

No, Basque separatism is active and an infamous activist group ETA has been responsible for a lot of bloodshed. But they're primarily attacking Spanish targets and have never done mass terror attacks like this one in France.

The French Intrior Minister won't be giving a death count until a few hours because there are a lot of critically wounded people.

A definite backlash will follow against Islam (If Islamic extremists are behind this) and will probably lend a lot of support to the anti immigration sentiment that has been building over the last couple of years, not just in France but across Europe, which is not fundamentally a bad thing. My biggest fear is that it will lead to violent retaliations and the rise of more extreme rightist groups (IE: The genetic superiority of the whites kind of groups.)

The news is encouraging people to not jump to the conclusion that this is Islamic terrorism. At any point did anyone doubt it? Who else could it be, greedy bankers?
one of the people on the stream I'm listining to said
although alah akbar was heard, lets not jump to conclusions

saying that will make people more angry and for good reason.

It's too bad the retaliation won't be laser focused directly on putting ISIS into history's rubbish bin.

True. Like all big momentous attacks, all sides will try and push their agendas. ISIS will call it a great victory, tumblr will blame the whites, the Right will blame the darkies, the Left will blame the Right and the Alt Right will blame the Jews. As usual, nothing will be done about the big scary monster all the way out in the Middle East.
