The Elder Scrolls

Is OpenMW the best way to have a vanilla playthrough in current year? I've played Morrowind a couple of times but never got far for reasons.
I would say so. It makes for a much smoother experience and it also includes some optional minor bug fixes and features such as your cursor turning red when hovering over an item that will be counted as stolen if you pick it up or an option to stop merchants from equipping items that you sell them. Again these are all optional and even without them I would still say that OpenMW is better than standard Morrowind,

I mean, I'm being hyperbolic for humor but the whole "living in a gods dream" thing certainly has some similarities to living in a wind fishes dream.

I'm also assuming that was a Kirkbride invention since the lore was super loose before Morrowind IIRC
The whole dream thing isn't something that originates from Zelda. There's tons of stories that used it that predate it by hundreds of years. Hell even Lovecraft used it.

Yeah but the shitpost/joke is funnier if you attribute it to a kiddy video game like Links Awakening and not dark/serious writing like Lovecraft.

Kirkbride did some, key word some, of the metaphysics for morrowind, it is just that his stuff has a large shadow in Oblivion and Skyrim plus the later spin offs. Lefay and Rolstone had vastly different approaches from Howard and Emil. Morrowind from the sounds of it was a hell development, where Howard basically took an Axe to a lot of the lore to fit what he thought was cool, this continues in Oblivion with the reduction of kings to counts and the dark brotherhood from a hitman guild to a death cult.

People shit on Toddler for butchering TES lore, but imho, Kirkbride's writings were too batshit insane for any game. He really needs an editor who can properly put together his ideas. Besides, his style is too complex and off-putting for casual players. TES is a AAA game series and needs to be appealing for your average Joe. And your average Joe wouldn't like CHIM or C0DA. Simple as.

I don't like more modern approach to lore that Bethesda has nowdays, but if you leave Kirkbride alone and let him write whatever he likes, he makes some cool, but absolutely incomprehensible bullshit. Like C0DA, which sounds cool as a concept but is a horrible as a story (sorry, Kirkbride fanboys).

Speaking of Godd, PatricianTV mentioned in his video that initially Legion's questline was very different from what we see in MW, and was rewritten by Todd. Well, it explains why it's the most boring piece of shit in the whole game.

I'll be honest, I don't pay attention to exactly what Kirkbride did or didn't do. I know he did all the CHIM shit, but outside of that anytime someone points to something he did it turns out to be some stupid shit or not really in the games shit that makes no sense to me.

That's why I like to shit on him a lot. He seems like a druggie who is hailed as a genius by the more retarded sect of Morrowind fanboys

Absolutely, Kirkbride is too much of a schizo and can't write coherent stories without sperging out. His creativity, when heavily tardwrangled is what gives us the best TES lore.

I'm admittedly rather smitten with a couple parts of some of the things he wrote for the Altmer because it makes them seem so alien and different from humanity. I think In Pedo Impedimenta falls into this as well since it's not as schizo-sounding as Kirkbride's shit, at least in the first half. And not because I'm biased for the Altmer or anything...

I think this was already posted here, but if so, here's a reminder of how stupid some of his stuff can get.

Didn't Kirkbride end up marrying someone from a TES lore subreddit and recently get a bunch of shit from faggots for some shit he wrote about Vivec raping his children to death or something?

He married LadyNerevar who just seems to be a fangirl for TES. She's a mod on two dead subreddits with TES-related names if that counts. That second one though, coming from the guy who wrote how Vivec's spear is really just Molag Bal's dick that he bit off and fashioned, it doesn't sound too surprising.

I can't even load my saves on Anniversary edition without the game freezing my entire computer on the loading screen or finishing loading but sitting on a black screen with sounds playing in the background, even after checking back and updating SKSE/SKSE-dependent mods to their most recent versions. Fucking Bethesda.

Did they include anything with AE that required fucking with the back end? I swear they just did it to piss people off.

Pretty much any mod that uses SKSE plugins had to be completely rewritten, as far as I can tell, because Bethesda updated how DLLs were read. Most of the smaller plugins got updated within a few days, but RaceMenu only just got updated, and many popular mods that require SKSE still aren't updated.

She was a major dev for Tamriel Rebuilt, too. That's mainly how I knew about her

Unpopular opinion here, but I don't think the Altmer should be so alien given that every culture in Tamriel descends from Aldmeri culture. I think that spot is more or less occupied by the Dunmer and all their batshit customs, as they surely did their best to abandon all their old altmer ways.
Besides, Pocket Guide to the Empire might as well be imperial propaganda, and Summerset in Arena looked fairly generic. That said tho...

Almost all historical cultures are to some degree. The Romans, Celts, Hellens, and Germanics did some pretty weird shit. I would like to see a version of Alinor that sees magic being used as a common resource. I have always liked the idea of the Mer being kind of alien to human sensibilities but I think that they will have to make the Alinor more simplistic due to gameplay and development limitations as well as Bethesda appealing to the wider market.

I think that something like some of the areas from the dreaming city in Destiny 2 (bad business practices, good art) where nature and advanced architecture is blended and mixed with a crystalline theme would fit the Altmer, and you could add some nice lighting and colorful reflections, have a different color palate and chalk the Pocket guide as an over-exaggeration.
