If he had an involuntary commitment after he turned 18 there's a court record but colleges don't usually check those, especially not for an undergrad in gender studies or whatever. I tend to agree, but I think he (or Jeanette) might have had no choice but to tell them when it became clear that he would need to defer enrollment. Especially at a school like Harvard, there are so many kids on the wait-list every year that deferring requires a documented reason. For every spot in the freshman class, there are dozens of qualified applicants who will actually be able to matriculate on time with less hassle, and unless there's a reason for deferring that would create bad optics if Harvard didn't accept it, they want to give the acceptance to someone who isn't a massive liability before setting foot on campus. Even if they just said he was having "health issues", he would have likely needed to provide a note from a physician. Now, obviously, because of HIPAA, the physician would not be able to disclose the specifics of a patient's health, but I'm thinking that Harvard may have needed more documentation than "Jazz's vagina hurts and he will not be at school today, plz no bullie".

Well, I'll be honest (and thank you for the explanation). Deferring admission twice for a non-legacy student has to be a first for Harvard. I know Jazz is a "celebrity", but he's D list at best. I'd be pretty irritated if I were "Harvard material" and busted ass for four years just to get waitlisted while some middling student with a rotting crotch got to defer until he was ready. The kind of student who even considers applying to Harvard is driven and competitive, and I can't imagine any of them looking kindly on someone who defers for any reason short of getting run over by a bus and being physically unable to get to school, and EVEN THEN, just do some PT and find someone to wheel you into Freshman Seminar in your body cast.

I know the COVID thing has made it tricky for colleges, so perhaps one deferral will be forgiven. Who knows, maybe he'll be super popular as the lone 21 year old in the freshman dorms.
