Depends on where you live because it can save you a ton of time dealing with traffic. I live in a city with two light rail lines: one is small and connects the two major transportation hubs and the other connects downtown to the suburbs. The issue with them is the fact that there tends to be a substantial amount of waiting time between trains, so if you miss one you're shit outta luck for the next 10-20 minutes, if not longer. They're also slower than buses too so I personally use them if I'm not in a rush, which is the exact opposite of what you want your tax dollars to be going to.
