Quit that to join a significantly smaller corporation. Now, software's a gig/service/art thing for me. I keep up with the CS research / theory end of things. From my angle, things look very grim. Everything's getting culturally enriched. Trannies/degenerates/mental-illness everywhere. Actually useful coders with vision and comprehension seem to be trending down.

I will say one of differences may be that i can only speak to US culture. Canada may very well be how you describe.

That's why small towns are often so harmonious. You can't do anything without the whole town finding out, and everyone knows everyone so it's incredibly easy to spot and gatekeep outsiders. Also when the town cop or county sheriff has to respond to a call, they often know intimately the details of the situation. They know jimbo was never quite right after the war and he tends to have issues around the same time every year. They know when a kid comes from a broken home and what the family situation is like.

It's not perfect, but it's harder to go full authoritarian when you personally know everyone you're stepping on.
