Good men of character and self control are rarely eager to bloody their hands, as benefitting their Christian nature and self control. This is a trait to be admired and emulated by their brothers and their sons, to see a man that can refrain from the temptation to do harm when afforded the opportunity. We can only hope one day to live in a society people entirely by such men.
It is a shame that low, cowardly men of violence and iniquity exist, however, and do people much of the world. They often see honorable men as weak and potential targets for predation, abuse, and oppression. Seeing that restraint as a failing, they often press hard against such honest men - and being once forgiven, will continue to press. They may see the deference of the honorable man to peace as a sign to oppress further and further, thinking there is no limit to the largess of the kind and just man. They are incorrect, but so blinded by their own wicked arrogance that they cannot comprehend the danger that they place themselves in.
When at last the honorable man of discipline has had enough, and turns his attention to the adversary take up the sword with all the focus and strength that stayed his hand until that moment. He will act with determination and thoroughness to destroy the threat root and branch, never swayed by doubt or trial. He has already given the full measure of his mercy and suffered indignity enough.
Wicked men tremble when the righteous stand.
