Having quickly peroused the ending section of the book I think you might've misremembered. I do, however, see a parallel with what someone else commented earlier about Ceaucescu's goons committing suicide after his fall.

It might have been one of the other books I read about them. I distinctly remember saying to myself "holy fucking shit" when I read about the chainsaw thing because it was so unbelievably brutal. You have to realize that when communist societies fall, the pendulum swings back at lightning speed and the rage boils over instantly because of how horrifically the people were treated.
