there are no militias or volunteers anymore there, all troops are regular.

In the past years, Minsk agreement limited calibers and setup of arms around the demarcation line, no artillery over 120mm, no combat aviation. With Minsk agreement dead ... all is back on the table.

That's not quite true. The only soldiers currently deployed at the Donbas are volunteers. Conscripts were removed a long while ago while Azov and Donbas battalions and other militias were legitimized and integrated into the National Guard. They still exist and are deployed in the region.

The Minsk treaty, on the other hand, was never really followed. Here you can see the "prosecutor general" of Lugansk happily firing a 122mm D30 howitzer at Ukrainian positions just a couple of days ago. The guns are there and have always been there.

Putin has just been waiting for his wargoal justification to complete and wants to ally with the rebels so he can join their war as he can't directly declare on Ukraine due to the non-agression pact. He better hope he kept his doctrines up to date!

If they want war, how hard would it be to just do a false fag like Biden's being claiming they're about to do, any day now, for the past several weeks? Seems like the FSB already has lots of experience in that. This new push for world domination over Eastern Europe by recognizing meme states sounds like an overly elaborate and exotic plan like what Dr Evil would come up with.

Possible alternatives include the Russian government being bumbling retards much like their Western counterparts, who thought rattling a few sabers might change the situation to their liking, found it didn't really work, and are now pulling ideas out of their ass in the style of a flailing middle manager who's way out of his depth but can't afford to admit to corporate that he's not going to meet this quarter's sales target

The FSB is trying their best to make a legitimate false flag, they’ve blown up two cars, bombed a few fields, and recorded an incursion by armored vehicles that the Ukrainians don’t have. They’re going to have to do the same thing they did to get the Chechen war started and actually bomb a real Russian city with an actually lethal explosive. Kharkhov for example has the biggest tank factory in the world...since the 1930s. Its literally an entire city in an of itself. Ukraine uses it still today

My thoughts on this exactly. Donbass is going to end up being another Transnistria/Abkhazia/South Ossetia and the public will forget about it in the next few months like they forgot about Crimea. Ukraine can't take the fight to Russia, it couldn't take the fight to the DPR/LPR.

Arguably, the most peaceful option has been achieved here.

If I squinted really hard, huffed some industrial grade copium and performed Olympic-level mental gymnastics, I might be able to justify Putin's decision as finally enforcing the Minsk agreements since Russia signed them as one of its guarantors and spent eight years trying to implement them via diplomacy.

The loss of territory post-Cold War actually made the Russian border harder to defend because it made it longer. Moving west allows the Russians to anchor themselves into a series of small geographical chokepoints that give them a substantially smaller border to patrol.

Basically imagine if the US took over Mexico in order to shrink its southern border to a tiny gap in Central America instead of the massive one it currently shares with Mexico.

Dude, it's 2022 or something. False fags don't have to be believable, the government just needs to say it is, get their domestic MSM to repeat it, and the pesky details will soon be forgotten by most normies by the time the missiles are flying anyway. It wasn't believable that Saddam Hussein had WMD and was about to do Norm-11 Part 2, it wasn't plausible that the Serbs were doing a Holocaust to the Kosovans, and I don't think they even bothered to come up with a good excuse to murder Colonel Gaddafi and turn Libya into Mad Max: The Country.
