1. Buffer space. You can garrote the Russian state by seizing the flat open terrain north of the Caucasus that stretches between the Black and Caspian seas. The Nazis tried to do this in WWII and were pushed back at Stalingrad at great cost. The launching point of this maneuver is in eastern Ukraine. By pushing any Western forces to the Dniepr they have a much more defensible position.I genuinely don't understand why Russia is doing this. What do they have to gain? What does Ukraine have that they want? Putin seems like too smart of a guy to just shell a country because he can. What's the real motivation for all this?
2. The Crimea. Russia needs to hold it as its Black Sea Fleet is based in Sebastopol. This includes securing access to fresh water, which this will gain them.
3. The Black Sea. It contains one of Russia's major fleets, can't be touched by the US due to the Montreux Convention, and contains pretty large recently discovered natural gas reserves. If Turkey finishes its canal it can circumvent the Montreux Convention and give the US Navy access to the Black Sea. By seizing the Black Sea coast of Ukraine now, while the Convention is still in force, it allows Russia to invade with naval and air superiority, and prevents Ukraine from tapping the gas reserves and becoming a competitor when it comes to gas exports. It also gives them access to Russian-aligned separatists in Transnistria.
4. Bloody nose for the West. Our FP apparatus is staffed by literal retards who larp as West Wing characters. Russia has been warning us for decades to stop expanding NATO. They fucked up Georgia to drive this point home, and now they're going to fuck up Ukraine and hope that we finally learn that they see it as an act of aggression. The idea the Ukraine is entitled to determine its own foreign policy irrespective of any balance of power calculus is a retarded fairy tale that the West must be forced to abandon.
