Putin made it clear he was planning to invade, sat around a bit taking in the responses from the world to doing this, then decided whether the probable benefits of doing it, weighed against the costs of the angriest of denunciations, made it still profitable to do it.

No, not really. The Ukraine is a small country that primarily exists on the good graces of other countries. They arent able to project their will by themselves, as is being proven right now with Russia. Harsh reality of geopolitics.

After the USSR collapsed they were actually the third largest nuclear power just by virtue of how many soviet warheads were left on their soil. They gave them up as part of an agreement that their sovereignty be protected in absence of nuclear deterrence. I'm sure they regret that now. To be honest it doesn't seem like a sustainable long term solution. Wrecking their industry, infrastructure and agriculture back to the stone age then leaving back to those new independent republics would be the best play. Would be easier than governing a population that dislike you and would make Ukraine a nonfactor for a long time.

Russia was fine allowing Ukraine to exist as an independent nation as long as it remained neutral and demilitarized i.e. the status quo from the end of the cold war through the Trump years.
Asking for weapons and training from NATO is a sign of aggression and essentially the beginning steps of NATO integration. It was a very dumb decision.

It was retarded, but also understandable as from their perspective they likely bought into the sales pitch of Obama and Biden's people who acted like they'd have Ukraine's back. Doesn't help that most English language news media supported the fantasy that Biden was super competent and was going to "stand up to Putin".

I've been seeing this from mostly hippie cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. Typically they come out, Russian cops beat the shit out of them, and they go back inside. Seems to work for the most part.

I'd need more than a tweet from the French with no article or source besides "US defense official" to consider that an actual objective from Russia, especially when they'd need to take over the whole country to make that a non-negotiable. Which is something I really don't think is the goal. It doesn't make sense to me to commit to something like that instead of a smash and grab to secure territory that governments will bitch about but not actually think it worth intervening directly over.
