My thoughts on the press conference:
  1. Biden almost had me fooled for the first 4 minutes. There’s is at least one decent speech writer left in the admin. I’m actually happy for the sanctions because I think the aggression should be punished but also we should not escalate or get directly involved.
  2. They don’t actually think sanctions will work though, and Biden essentially admitted this.
  3. He made a big show about Western solidarity in sanctions but let slip that China is not on board and India is still not convinced.
  4. He said “wait a month” specifically, and essentially said that they’re counting on partisan resistance from Ukraine to counter Russia’s rapid expansion. This really left a bad taste in my mouth.
  5. He mentioned easing suffering at the US pump not because he’s actually going to do anything about it but because he’s desperate for a scape goat for his disastrous energy policy. Nothing Biden has done has helped fuel prices, but he’s hoping to somehow tie rising prices to Russia in people’s minds.
  6. I also loved the special shout-out to other suppliers saying “please don’t raise prices” and admitting, on the world stage, that on the eve of a potential military obligation to our allies we are draining out strategic reserves. I cannot stress how colossally stupid it is that he dedicated a significant part of a 15 minute press conference to admitting this.
  7. He pointed out how much money we gave Ukraine; maybe not a great tactic considering how it looks like it’s making little difference and how it reminds people that we had a direct hand in escalating this.
  8. “America stands up to bullies” sounds childish coming from him. It undermines whatever strength the rest of his message had by trivializing Putin’s actions. Especially when he’s expecting the people of Ukraine to do most if the standing up.
  9. He mentioned Russia manipulating its neighbors through corruption and coercion. Pot, meet kettle. We have no moral standing to say that and anyone being honest with themselves knows it. Maybe you have to say it for diplomacy’s sake, but coming from Biden especially, decrying corrupt manipulation of the Ukraine government specifically made me almost mad enough to snap my pencil in half.
To quote Rekeita’s livestream guest Andrew Branca, Biden has thrown us off a building and now, 10 ft from the ground, is asking “well what do you want me to do about it now?”

EDIT: As a post-script, I was surprised at how sharp the questions were. I feel like Biden was actually taken to task more than usual, but then again, it was all in the service of stoking the war hawks’ agenda, so it’s not that surprising in the end.

Not to mention that the amount of explosive needed to spread radioactivity of used reactor fuel to the point where it would present a significant risk would be very large. You would kill more people with the blast than with the radiation.

Cleanup is no more complicated than a pressure washer. Wash it down the storm drains.

The scary stuff is short-lived fission products like I-131 or intentionally crated stuff like Co-60. Some 30 year old spent fuel with some Cesium in it? Not that big of a deal. The bomb to atomize it is the bigger threat.

If these are actual Russian prisoners and not Ukrainians larping as POWs, it looks like the fella on the right has been roughed up. Ukraine is autistic enough to both fake POWs and beat the shit out of real ones.

is there anyway to compare current radars with a 'normal' day? couple raf planes went over the north sea a few hours ago, wanted to know if this (or any of the activity over europe) was normal day to day patrols or if they were checking for russian ships in north sea?

It's already happening. Which is why all of the sanctions won't amount to shit. Any high-tech technology they need they can get from China who is making all of it and that accelerates when China takes Taiwan. It's why the can't take Russia off of SWIFT, it forces them to accelerate the plans they already have with China to make a separate payment processor.

Some Ukrainian pilot went full on Ace Combat 4 and fought several other russian fighter jets by himself according to rumors, no one knows if he survived.
