Looks like it isn't just ships, here we go boiz
That happens all the time. They like to buzz the island to test their defenses/feel better about their tiny yellow wangs,

They buzz them to wear down the pilots and gear. Taiwan doesn't have enough planes to keep a constant patrol/intercept going without costing them. The more China buzzes them, the more likely it is for the Taiwanese pilots to fuck up, or for their gear to break when they do attack. It's not just a psychological thing.

Ukraine vs. Russia is going to make Taiwan vs. China look like a bigger memoryhole when compared to the Hong Kong riots that took place almost three years ago.

Never thought the Chinese would have the balls to rip a page out of the old Nip playbook of attacking someone while the western powers are distracted with war somewhere else.
This wouldn't be the first time China pulled this move.

While the west was distracted by the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, China took the opportunity to invade India over a disputed Himalayan border, kicking off the Sino-Indian War.

My guess? Chinese fishing ships. If they were troop ships or something, I'd expect we would have heard about Chinese troop movements.

They are probably fishing vessels.

They're either pirates or mercs.

Guys, guys--

What if it's fishing ships filled with troops? They could just jam full-throttle up to the coast and let them off, and any effort to question or destroy them could be declared an unprovoked provocation by China. Then, once strategic objectives have been seized, the invasion can begin in earnest.

Edit: Actually, after some thought, a nighttime amphibious operation might make more sense. In any case, I'd see if I could get any thermal imaging of those vessels - see if there are any unusual heat readings.

Taiwan has plenty of jets and they continue to buy more from the US. Chinese buzzes have been happening on a weekly/monthly basis for YEARS now. What is happening is having an opposite effect to what you describe. The scrambles/patrols to intercept them at this point is just practice for the RoC pilots and helps test the reliability of their gear. Also its so routine that the Taiwanese civilians even stopped giving a shit. A few months ago 30 something CCP jets violated Taiwan's airspace and it was no big deal to them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if China snapped up those little islands Taiwan has right off its coastline to make a point, but I doubt this is the full invasion of the main island. There would need to be a bigger buildup to have a realistic chance of success.
Pretty much this. China has no chance of sailing an invasion force across the strait but Taiwan has no chance of holding or taking back the Kinmen islands if China decided to get froggy.
