Electricity generation is not the main consumer of gas, residential heating and industrial use (furnaces etc.) are. I know many amerimutts don't know what winter is, but most of eastern and northern europe still use gas for heating since its cheap and the upfront cost is lower than heatpumps or oil heating. Changing to a different energy source for heating is a long term problem for europe because most houses are designed to be used for at least 50 years and has nearly nothing to do with wind or solar.
