Fun fact: the difference between Kiev and Kyiv is a difference between Ukrainian and Russian, as the Russian name is Киев and the Ukrainian name is Київ. Kiev is not ‘outdated’, it’s just a romanization based off of a different language, and since Ukrainian is kind of a bullshit language (less Slavicly ‘pure’), it’s better to use the Russian romanization in my opinion. Either Kiev or Kiyev would be correct. Kiyev uses the more modern practice of adding wye to distinguish between Е (ye) and Э (e).

Fast forward 2014, successfully ousted russian puppet Yanukovich, and Putin seized Crimea. Germany concerned with Putin's boner for imperialism, promised to strive for drastically reduce european's dependence on Rooskie gas pipelines.
