I have. I am Polish, and from a part that is close to Ukrainan border. It might not be up to standards of other european capitals, but Ukrainian Economy used to get better each passing year.

Here is Ukrainan and Russian GDP over the last years. It last 4 years it grows strong, while Russina declines. Just a reminder, in 2014 Crimea got annexed, if that wouldnt be the case, it's GDP would grow even stronger.

GDP is not everything. Rusted trams (most impressive, I was able to see the road through the hole in the corner), abandoned parks, failing infrastructure - maybe economy is better on the paper, but money are certainly not reaching the right places.

Russia as the Soviet Union lost like a million soldiers in the Battle of Stalingrad alone. That lasted 5 months, if you average it out, the casualties work out to much more than 1,000 in one day.

You should see the death toll from the 900-day Siege of Leningrad. 1.1 million at the lowest estimate and 5.5 million at the highest, and most of those deaths were due to starvation by the Nazis and Finns cutting off all land routes into the city. It's the single largest loss of life ever known in a modern city.
