It seems to me they are both deeply insecure people that desperately wanted to be liked and to have some kind of power over a life they felt powerless in. That's the entire draw of the whole woke thing.
A fantasy land where you live in a world surrounded by paper tigers nazis and just doing what you were going to do anyway (living on twitter) defeats them is a perfect world for people like them.
Need to level up in this fantasy world? Claim to be non-binary. It's a perfect way to steal the plight of being trans without actually being trans or doing anything other than being unfuckable, which they were also already doing anyway.
Indeed, Burch was clearly an insecure dude who wanted to be liked and taken seriously, hence all the deep thoughts articles about games back in the day.
He's also one of those dudes that just band wagon hops, so when edgy humor was vogue, he engaged in it, when pearl clutching Wokeness was in vogue, he went along with that too.
He's constantly backed the wrong horse and doubled down since Anita Sarkeesian and Gone Home, but it was GamerGate that made him tard rage so hard he quit his job. He had to keep doubling down for the sake of his "friends" in the game journo clique, meaning the losses kept piling up. Think of all the opinions he'd have to walk back to return to his glory days. His involvement with Chuck Tingle and Zoe Quinn alone is an insurmountable hurdle at this point, and there's no way he'd throw all of his old friends and colleagues under the bus just to get back a career he hates.
It's funny, I did think Gone Home was kind of interesting, but I never thought it was any hill worth dying on, it's a valid criticism to be made that you need to have some actual gameplay with your story.
I was an early adopter of the "walking simulator" thing going all the way back to Dear Esther, it was kind of interesting for a while but the novelty wore off fast, especially once things went Woke, never bothered with any of the later ones like Firewatch.
My point is people like Jim so vehemently defending stuff like that is just embarrassing.
The mask slipped for a lot of YouTubers in the 2010s, or more accurately, it was revealed they had no mask. The likes of James Rofle and Doug Walker were playing an exaggerated unhinged angry nerds that never got over their childhood media for fun. Spoony and Linkara were unhinged angry nerds who never got over their childhood media.
At least James and Doug turned out to be one of the good ones.
All the disgusting shit in this thread = good. Importing a bikini volleyball game = bad. No irony, no sarcasm.
This is such a perfect and hilarious example, Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is just women in swimwear, not much more spicier than a Sports Illustrated Swimwear Edition magazine at the end of the day, but that's bad, meanwhile it's ok to show off your Bad Dragon dildo collection, there's no internal logic or consistency with these people.
