President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Added - Wonder if any NATO countries flying MiG-29s might be flying them, now in Ukrainian colors,to Lvov. Not a huge number but surely would help make up for combat losses. Could see aircraft parts coming in from the West, munitions, etc.
Or could have some random US military forces be the real ones operating the special weaponry Ukraine reportedly used to take down planes.

Because it honestly sounds unbelievable that Ukraine would necessarily have been able to do such a thing on its own or that the US would have been able to properly train people to use such equipment (or just risk the locals messing up when using it). Like this quite large tank killing rocket. Seems like Ukrainians are getting all kinds of absurd equipment tossed their way to fight the Russians with and it wouldn't be that hard to send along a few people to operate a few random things while they're at it. Shame it's probably one of those things we won't find out for decades as to what all is going on.

Saw on the news that facebook and twatter has denied the Russian government of posting anything + there are some demonstrations against it.
Oh yeah, you totally got them! It's a complete burn!
Thanks for turning off the news spigot so I can't tell what they're doing or what plays they're trying to make.

People just seems to not know what war is, and their opinion is totally irrelevant. As they would just get plummeted down.

The US offered to get the Ukrainian presidents out of the country, which he denied. Then went on to hold a speech about how this is so horrible.
Less talking, more fighting retard.

I feel bad for the Ukrainian people, as this seems to be the people in power's fault. I have no trust in that Ukraine is going to win with "power of friendship". And it would be for the best to just give Ukraine to Russia without fight.
It seems silly really, but here is a key point on this one; while Russia is seemingly not the master of the battlefield it claims to be - their information/disinformation campaigns are very effective. They're good at them, with the west only just catching up in terms of doctrine and use.

Limiting Russia's official access to Western social media helps out a dent in its ability to carry out these campaigns. It's not a complete halt, more a bump in the road, but one additional thing to deal with nonetheless.

An example of how this could work: Spreading ideas of mass retreats can help cause real ones. Preventing Russia communicating that message, can help prevent rumours taking off.

LMAO

"I appeal to the servicemen of the armed forces of Ukraine, do not let Neo-Nazis & Ukranian Ultra-Nationalists use your children, wives & the elderly as human shields. Take power into your own hands" ~Vladimir Putin, attempting to talk the Ukrainian army into turning the guns on their own government.

That's kind of a sign of weakness, isn't it? Sounds desperate to me.
What? That's a common tactic throughout history, even the Nazis used it. It's an appeal.

The Fin's absolutely HATE russia with a passion of a thousand burning suns. They would rather nuke their own country than let russia get one square meter of land out of them. These are the same people that allied with the Nazi's in WW2 AGAINST the russians.

You do not fuck with Finland.
Lmao, their land was only used for proxy battles between East Slavs and Swedes for hundreds of years. Russians built the infrastructure there and allowed them autonomy and later independence. There's no reason to be afraid of Finland, a country which has only one significant contribution in matters of war.

Simo Häyhä’s been dead for twenty years, the Russians have nothing to be afraid of.

Pan-Slavism was only ever popular among the Russian aristocracy. Nowhere else, except for a brief time in Czechia. And that speech was about Zeon's effort, not about the struggle of all Spacenoids.

Ukraine wants to be in Nato, Russia doesn't, so they'll eliminate Ukraine's credence as a candidate. They don't want Ukraine, at least not all of it.

Irregulars and guerrillas fight well in mountain areas, not on flat land. They'll have to stay in cities, which can be starved.
The Ukrainians ran a low level insurgency against the Soviets into the mid 1950s post WWII. The National hatred of the Russians is real, all this is doing is reinforcinga sense if Ukrainian national identity and unity. I would hardly call that destabilizing.

So what? The goryani of Bulgaria had an insurgency that lasted till the 60s. That doesn't prove anything.
In times of strife, tribalism would be at its strongest, that doesn't mean Ukraine will be a capable country waging a defensive war. Or be a future valid candidate for NATO.

>Are you okay with the world going to war over Austria
>Are you okay with the world going to war over the Sudetenland
>Are you okay with the world over the rest of Czechoslovakia
etc etc etc. At a certain point you have to be willing to fight these assholes over the minor shit, because if you don't you'll eventually be fighting them over the majors, unless you somehow think Putin will totally stop if he gets what he wants in Ukraine

>Inb4 we should have just let Hitler have everything he wanted because then the world would magically be a totally better place etc etc
Of course not and this is different. Russia wouldn't touch Ukraine, or Georgia, if it wasn't for greedy fat fucking NATO trying to gather more allies. Clinton promised Putin in the 90s the west would steer clear of ex soviet states then broke the promise, saw what happened to Georgia.

I mean even if people think that the fight is worth it then couldn't we fucking wait few years instead of starting this shit after 2 years of the coof shitshow when the world is fucked cos of crippled economy, inflation and western diversity and equality communists turning everything to shit.

Unless that war is supposed to fix all of the above somehow.
