President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

If you have even a scintilla of appreciation for freedom and democracy, it’s impossible to watch Ukrainians’ bold defense of their country from the dyspeptic Goliath next door and not feel inspired.
My appreciation for freedom and democracy decreases day by day. Our freedom and democracy isn't allowed to have borders, while we're supposed to support Ukraine place where a bunch of rowdy Ruskies crossed a fake line and somehow became illegal people. We shouldn't be supporting Ukraine, because Russians should not be illegal, in fact they're probably more Ukranian than the native Ukranians. They deserve all the civil rights and Ukranians should stop being so racist, that's the true free and democratic way.

It’s tempting to compare them to the 300 legendary Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae, standing in the gap for liberal democracy, self-determination, and a saner, more just world free of autocrats and wannabe tyrants. Indeed, Ukraine’s democratically elected president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is essentially conducting a real-life reenactment of Air Force One, refusing to abandon his country and its citizens during the conflict—most recently refusing an offer from the U.S. to get out of Dodge
First of all boomer, no one under the age of 30 knows what Air Force One was, and kill yourself for doing movie comparisons. Second of all, Air Force One, it's a movie, and is fake. So... maybe he really is doing an Air Force One...

We absolutely shouldn't be. Australia, the US, and Canada all have massive reserves of titanium-rich ores. Same with bauxite for aluminum production.
If only the us could of build the keystone Pipeline we could have supplied oil to us in the world tenfold but no the greenpeace hippie tree huggers had to step in along with Biden and put an end to it thus making us dependent on other countries for affordable oil. Also as a way so they could push their faggot ass electric cars in our faces when in reality where are you going to find a charging port in the middle of the upper peninsula of Michigan??

This is why I hate war in the 21th century. We came from knights to this:
Ukrainian writes the daughter of a Russian soldier lol complete subhuman

Wow, that's an incredibly unsympathetic thing to do. This went from "Russia is making an unprovoked attack on poor, innocent Ukrainians" to "Haha! You're dad is dead!"

Maybe the Ukrainians deserve to be invaded. I dunno, that's a pretty cunt thing to do. What's next, are they gonna paint lipstick on the corpse & shove a pink unicorn dildo up its ass & send pictures of it to his kids?

That’s what seems so strange in all of this. Historically Putin is or has been a shrewd, if evil, operator. You could generally see him planning his moves out well in advance . There would be a clear purpose to them. Even when barbaric. Even in Syria you could understand his goals and motivations. What he wanted out of it, and how he had arranged things to insure his goals reasonably well.

But this does not look or feel like old school Vlad. There are too many bad assumptions. Too many wildcards and bad bets. His own people don’t seem to know what the actual goal is here? His soldiers on the ground seem confused on that point. When was the last time we saw Putin overtly threatening to nuke everyone around him? Finland? Sweden? That reads more like a Drunken tirade from Khrushchev or Boris Yeltsin. What happens when the uncontested leader of a nuclear superpower suffers from dementia? And no for once I’m not talking about Creepy Grandpa Badfinger. What exactly is going on in Russia?
Yeah. I didn't think he'd invade, because there's no real upside, but it happened anyway. So, maybe there's a hidden objective? As it stands, it seems slapdash. Like, if you want to "recognize the separatist regions," shouldn't you lay the ground work of trying to legitimize a government for said region? Like, why isn't he flanked by some dudes in all his addresses playing the part of the "true government of the contested region" for a month or two in advance?

The fucked thing is it was all done and ready to go too. There was a Canadian facility that had brand new government paid equipment all purchased and ready, only to have the whole thing shut down last minute forcing them to basically liquidate it all through second hand resellers in the US and other countries. An entire facility worth of equipment being sold pennies on the dollar by second hand sellers that usually deal in refurbished equipment because of one band of retards.

Not this piece of shit again. Dude's a grade A retard and possibly a sociopath according to those who know him from his university.

Its not surprising he put himself in yet another stupid and dangerous situation for attention.

This retard will end up stranded in the Ukraine, and UK people will be spammed about it in the news for weeks - calling it now. Last time he made it out of Afghanistan, his face was all over the news going all "it's awwwright, it all turned out okay in the end!" like your retarded younger brother who walks off an injury after doing stupid shit for the vine.

This guy is such an attention whore

Call me MATI but I hope a bomb drops on him. Bragging about going on holiday to ukraine, with no respect or empathy for the whole situation. I'd hate to deal with a guy like that.

Cue the REEEEEEing from the British press when this faggot manages to get himself blown up or shot.

You people are mad salty a guy with balls is doing what he likes.

That just makes it so much worse.

I'm more concerned about the infrastructure being able to support that shit. Let's see how the power grid looks when 50% of cars on US roads are plug-ins, especially as we buy in more and more into the green eco-bullshit.

These idiots don't know what seasons or inclement weather is. That Green New Deal which had the idea to demolish every building and rebuild them with solar panels; okay, idiotcy aside, sounds okay... now tell me how the nothern half of the USA is gonna survive a fucking winter without burning every forest down for warmth? And SoCal has been having a cold snap, complete with snow recently. But their green ideas will work, based solely off brainwashing and good feels.
