Spent a few hours at my parents' earlier, with BBC and Sky News on in the background. It was striking that Ukraine was literally the only story; I didn't hear them mention covid once the whole time. The other thing was the complete one-sidedness of the coverage. I knew it would be pro-Ukraine, but there wasn't even the smallest attempt to provide balance, or even put into context why Putin might be doing what he's doing. Not saying I trust Russia at all, but 'our' side is no better, and they're not even pretending to be any more.

My hope is that they remove Russia from SWIFT prompting Russia and join China in use of the alternate system, and from there Russia threatens to cut the gas off to Europe - and does. And also start a nuclear arms race again.

Russia can't afford a new nuclear arms race (but they will say they can) and there are alternative energy sources for Europe - thought they will be expensive, but Russia will simply implode with little trade, no SWIFT and no sales to Europe.

They've got to get the ball to do this now. If not, Russia will continue to absorb states; and China will most certainly follow suit very rapidly. We don't want Chamberlains right now - we need Churchills and Teddy's now. And the only difference between them and others perhaps could be considered tactics but really it was simply the will to do what had to be done when it needed to be done.

Will alone separates Putin and the leaders of the EU and USA - and that is about it.

Something probably will happen in some form with Taiwan in the next 10-15 years sure, but how will Russia re-take Poland and the Baltic states? They are part of NATO, which includes three Nuclear powers. Ukraine isn't.
