Russia has always done the human wave meatgrinder. Drain off the supplies of the enemy and put stress on their logistics while holding back an even heavier punch in case the enemy has something the Russians didn't know about.

Yeah, baiting the enemy to waste ammo and supplies seems like another good reason for why Russia would use cannon fodder infantry, but they could just gather intel on Ukie supply building locations using spies, then use jets to bomb those places. There is no version of events where Putin does not attempt to take all of Ukraine and at least make it a puppet state. He cannot suffer a rump state in the west being indefinitely fed men and materiel to feed an insurgency in a territory he's trying to subjugate. He needs to take the whole country and lock down the borders or else it's going to be Vietnam but in his backyard.
