It ain't perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but Eugene Stoner made something that works "good enough" to be the standard issue weapon. That is to say, the thing you're gonna buy the most of, and give to most of your troops. That's basically what I glean from all these retarded replacement programs for the M16/M4 that go absolutely nowhere.

So did Mikhail Kalashnikov, for that matter.

On the whole, advancements in small arms design have actually slowed down a lot because there's not much more you can do without needlessly complicating shit and causing more problems than you solve. I'm pretty sure Gun Jesus himself (Ian Mccollum) has said this numerous times.
If it ain't broke...
Russia does this too; look at the AN-94's failure despite how much of an advance its recoil mechanism would be.

No one in the internet slapfight actually gives a shit about Ukraine. They're just superimposing their own political beliefs onto their preferred side. That's why Putin is totally based and fighting globohomo and the Ukrainians are heccing valid warriors for democracy and secular western culture.
Which is the real tragedy. The worst part of this though is Putin and the Russian Soldiers have more in common with Reddit. They are fighting for a dream. A common delusion. Just like Reddit. Ukraine is fighting because those delusional retards are shooting at them and dropping bombs on their families.

Just in: Netflix will make a documentary based on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Main actor pic just dropped:

Volodymyr Zelensky in "Made In Ukraine", a parody song from 2014 apparently. Part of this was posted here earlier but this is the full version.

Call me old fashioned but I miss the days when Congressmen and Senators had the good sense to keep their fucking mouths shut and let the President do all the talking so everyone was on the same goddamn page at the same time instead of everyone leaking every possible halfassed proposal to the press.

Good to know.

On different note, I ran across this earlier to today:

And wanted to ask does Putin seriously sit that far away from his advisors? Other photos appear to corroborate it:
So what the fuck is up with that? Is he that terrified of being assassinated? Or just that paranoid about catching covid or something?
Maybe he sharted and didn't want anyone to smell it

M27 is replacing the SAW and the M4 but only for the USMC. It's basically a Germanized M4.

IIRC the military skipped over the A3 completely for the A4. The A4 was just an A2 but with picatinny rails.

The M27 is fine as a weapon platform, as a replacement for the SAW its an interesting choice. It lacks the volume of fire that the SAW can lay down, not to mention the outright rate of fire because you can swap barrels.
I think the usmc changed its tune and pushed to replace all weapons in the fire team with the m27 (except lead still will have m4) to address the volume of fire concerns.
The whole decision to move away from M4s seems short sighted as their adoption was largely due to cqb needs and urban warfare. The m27 is about the size of an m16a4.
Apparently the SAW is being replaced with the M27 iirc, which kind of looks like an AR-15 on steroids.

Though how was the M16A3 and M16A4 compared to the A2?

I get lighter = better when you're already humping around a huge heavy pack, but... you just have an expectation about guns and the newer ones violate it.

The A3 is an A2 with fully auto capability, I believe meant or at least used by special ops until they moved on, which was an incredibly short amount of time. A4 is the most updated version with picatanny rails. A4 is almost certain to come with an ACOG.

I was in the USMC connected to a weapons training battalion and got to play with a lot of these as they were first being introduced. The M27, IMR, introduction of SCAR's into Marsoc units to go along with their other goofy equipment, they essentially choose their kit. We also played with ak/sk variants, rpks, other crap like that occasionally. It's good to make soc friends because they invite you along to fun shit under the guise of "range safety".

The way we have isolated Russia since the end of the Cold War just isn't right. Western Europe dragged the world into two massive World Wars, Russia saw massive casualties in both and bore the brunt of the fighting. We spent decades rebuilding Western Europe, kissing their asses, and shitting and isolating Russia. I don't agree with Putin invading Ukraine, but he has many legitimate points, and it has shown just how piss poor the west's policy and diplomacy has been for decades.
