If it ain't broke...It ain't perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but Eugene Stoner made something that works "good enough" to be the standard issue weapon. That is to say, the thing you're gonna buy the most of, and give to most of your troops. That's basically what I glean from all these retarded replacement programs for the M16/M4 that go absolutely nowhere.
So did Mikhail Kalashnikov, for that matter.
On the whole, advancements in small arms design have actually slowed down a lot because there's not much more you can do without needlessly complicating shit and causing more problems than you solve. I'm pretty sure Gun Jesus himself (Ian Mccollum) has said this numerous times.
Russia does this too; look at the AN-94's failure despite how much of an advance its recoil mechanism would be.
