Putin wants this dude in particular gone, because he runs the show for the westerners that control Ukraine's government.
I would assume that the goal is to "liberate" and "hold elections" like Iraq and Afghanistan.
Old school cold war division between influences to create a buffer state within the country itself like Berlin.
This way, there's economic/political/cultural battles kept far away from Moscow.

They probably expected Zelensky to negotiate. With Ukraine's air force gone, and NATO making it clear they weren't going to intervene, that would be the reasonable choice.
Naturally, neither Zelensky nor his funders care how many peasants are going to die for their agenda.

I don't think that Zelensky has anything to say and he just parrots what his masters (NATO, US, ...) tell him to say. So far it seems that they dictate him to not give an inch to the Russians and having further negotiations is just for show or to get extra time.

I think that the last couple of days it became very clear to him that he's just a puppet acting on behalf of others so he's probably also worrying about his own future and that of his wife and kids. Will he come out of this as a hero, a crook, a martyr or a terrorist? With the US as friends it can be anything. If they can't use you anymore usually the latter.
Russia might also try to bribe him in one way or another.

He's realized nobody is coming to help most likely. Ironically nearly all his neighbors being in NATO prevents it. I suspect if two or three of them actually worked together they could hold back the conventional attack, but since they're all NATO, they can't do shit.

The funny thing about the russophobia is that they're affecting people who probably were the Russians who disliked Putin the most (e.g., Russian students in European universities and e-thots on stuff like OnlyFans). The whole thing is dumb and only permissible by the media because Russians are white.
