President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Oh how I want to hurt him. A lot.
Americans not understaning how other country works and telling russians "hurr durr just go and protest duh". In your country you can go full ape all you want, in Russia, tho? Even a known figure like Navalny got fucking poisoned, do anyone understands what will happen to a bunch of random russians? Right now some emotional teens and people in their early 20's went on peaceful protests and they got packed right away. Bigger protests? It will go south very quickly. Remind you, the lgbt activist was found with her head cut out of her body and police did nothing. The politician dude who had the courage to speak up against Kadyrov? Got threats of his family being hurt. And I'm sure they'll do what they promised if he didn't backpedal. Don't get me started on torturing cases of the said random russians.

Embargo is embargo. And it is a part of trade war. And war ALWAYS means someone will get hurt.

So yes, todays actions in West against Russia will kill some Russians, mostly common dudes - and so what?
They could punish the actual oligarchs who can change the situation. Be my guest strip shit out of oligarchs and army. Punishing peaceful civilians? Well, someone's is a sadist, then. Because they can't vote Putin out and can't do anything about it. Though, now everyone playing right into Putin's narrative of us vs. them. Very... productive? But I'm biased being part of those common dudes.

Hitler thought the Soviet Union would collapse if they merely kicked the door in after watching them blunder into Finland
They would have gotten stomped if the United States and Britain hadn't supplied them using the "Lend-Lease policy", something that Stalin himself admitted:

Feels a bit natural to be concerned if a nuclear power plant is attacked. Acting like it's some horrible act of dishonesty to panic in such a situation is strange, though I've been seeing that a lot with the Populist Inc people the last few days, I've also seen a number of them taking up this idea that it is essentially "emotional blackmail" to suggest they have sympathy for what Ukraine is dealing with.

There's also the general idea that it is virtue signaling to be against a European country being invaded.

These kinds of reactions are all a bit strange when we're talking about a country in Europe being invaded. I don't know about Box, but there do seem to be a lot of people acting as though it's some evil attack upon them, maybe depriving them the chance to denounce drag queen story hour, to suggest they give a shit that a country was invaded.

Holy fuck, this one is tough. Russian soldier captured by Ukrainians breaks down talking to his parents on the phone.
He tells them he was captured by enemy combatants, and they're absolutely unphased. He says they've spent four days running through swamp, freezing. That their troops are being wiped out. That's it's absolute madness down there. And they don't seem to care whatsoever. He's treated better by enemy forces than his own family.
Well, Ukrainians promised to give them HELL, they're delivering. But it's also a boy who didn't choose military service, it chose him. Like so many others.

With parents like that he's better off staying in Ukraine at this point. Parents would probably prefer monetary compensation Putin promised for their dead son rather than have him back. Fucking orcs.

One of the comments I google translated says "its simple the parents were expecting money for his death and sad he was still alive" or something to that effect.

Sounds good but the label of being a deserter/member of the enemy/ traitor is very very bad.

Not to mention when the dust settles will your higher ups seek retaliation by ether exile, fucking with family, or just just have a list of traitors and kill them.

Ukraine would basically need to get a whole lot of foreign countries to agree to give these defectors asylum

Many civilian Russians will also die, if war with NATO will start. And it will be a thing in few weeks, if Russians will not stop war with Ukraine. All sufferings of common Russians are fault of Putin. Sanctions and other bad things aren't made for funzies, but because Russia started a war.

This will be a catastrophe for Russia and common Ivan from middle of nothing, but they should blame Putin. If Putin wasn't a imperialistic fuckhead Russia will be a part of western world. They choose war, not trade so they must take burden of sanctions.

Not sure what we see, but vechicles look like ones used by VDV.

Believe it or not, most parents love their children more than the government. They tend to respond accordingly and would do anything to get their children back safe home.

Confirmed: Russians raped and them murdered at least six girls in Kherson.

Someone still feels bad for fried russian beasts? Someone still thinks we shouldn't destroy Russia by sanctions because poor Ivan from Moscow will suffer without new toys?
How's it been confirmed? I also don't think we should go to nuclear war over 6 claimed rapes. The west didn't even pause the migrate invasion over thousands of rapes.

Putin started the war, russians bear the concequences. Again, it's impossible to vote him out because he just waltzes in with power and money. Not enough votes? He just forges more.

I'm talking about peaceful people. Cancer patients and cat breeders are not those who raped kids. Soldiers and everyone involved should be punished for their actions.
Them and police also helping Putin to keep his position beating up peaceful protestors. So no, those are different kind of people.

You think Russia will start a war with West because their are under sanctions? Yeah, we can see on Ukraine how mighty russian army is.

Any peacful Russian has bad luck - thats how war looks like. Putin didn't take power in 2000 after a coup or something, he was elected. If russian army trully wants to save Russians, their shoul conduct a coup and remove Putin.

Also in war it is somethnign called "law of retaliation" - so bombing London by Germany in WW2 was illegal and was a war crime, but allies response to bomb shit from Germans in Dresden didn't perform a war crime. And this is the same: Russians killing Ukrainians are commiting a crime, but west killing Russians in sanctions have right to due that.

Rapists should be gutted with a garden tool, but this thinking is what people mean by "emotional blackmail."
