It doesn't matter if NATO would or wouldn't stage nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the important thing is that Russia's military and people seem to think that they would and that's all that matter when determining a motive to keep fighting. This is an existential war for many Russians and for a battle for Putin's place in history. If Putin gives up, tail between legs, he will be seen as a failure and while his regime will probably survive, it will be weakened and discredited.
