From a pacifist perspective, the most ideal solution would be to have all the Eastern European nations form a union of their own which would have mutual exclusivity laws with NATO, the EU, or any Russian alliances. This would basically block the west and east from having any real contact with each other. Economically, it would also be great for Eastern Europe because they'd be the middlemen in all east and west trade, which would essentially be free money. This is obviously not going to happen though.

This should have happened after the collapse of the soviet union.
Alas, they wanted gibs from the EU more than relevance and freedom.
