Above about $5/gal and it becomes worth looking into alcohol conversion and setting up a still. If it were possible to acquire crude oil as a private person I'd want to set up a CatCracker on principle (who doesn't want to boil some gasoline?). I'm not going to set out to do damage but I promise Innawoods Refinery is probably not going to be as clean/efficient as what we currently have.

I remember paying nearly $5/gallon during the Obama years, so I'm just happy I got one "normal" year of gas prices out of Biden first. Although I couldn't even use it because of COVID.

I think it's a lot simpler. Going abroad to do high-level dimploatic shit is one of the VP's defacto duties, if not actually set out as such, which means they're sending her because that's what's the VP is supposed to do, regardless of her competence or whether it's appropriate. The inference to take from that is that they're running on automatic pilot for a lot of these high-level functions; going through the motions, following the script, because they have no idea what else to do.

Oddly enough, the last time the Russians played merry hell in Crimea, the great world powers of the day were caught similarly flat-footed and flailed ineffectually, while the newspapers egged on demands for action, before throwing uncountable quantities of men and materiel at the problem. Ultimately the Russians were driven back (and we got at least one fun song out of it, eventually), but by all accounts it was a fairly pointless war.
