One thing to consider about it. The US is re-making the Marine Corps because of an internal military conclusion that traditional amphibious warfare and landings are obsolete. That anyone attempting them, in particular against Today's China, would see their forces utterly destroyed.
The Chinese themselves know about that analysis and those conclusions. The Chinese don't have to go the traditional route in terms a large combined arms landing on Taiwan. What if, for example, they simply embark on a campaign of reducing the place to rubble for as long as it takes until the government in Taiwan gives up? Is destroying the air defense system and the Taiwanese air force within the capabilities of China?

if you want to go with an alternative route of conquest, set up a blockade and full embargo of the island. taiwan is so utterly dependent on foreign trade, they'll collapse fast and hard.
a giant country like russia can survive an economic cutoff from world trade, because it has tons of farmland and massive amounts of natural resources. but taiwan has nothing - food, energy, fuel, raw materials, they rely on imports for basically everything.

The whole thing is PR. The moment tanks rolled in Zelensky was fucked because he's not a leader equipped for a huge war like that, but at the same time he couldn't just surrender right away, his basic aim was to try and force enough civillians to fight so the bloodshed looked horrible and Russia would give up if the world gave enough thumbs down emojis. The moment it appeared that Russia doesn't give a shit about shooting a farmer in the head if they were holding a gun the game was up. Now it's a case of hunkering down and trying to throw enough bodies at the Russians until the population goes "enough is enough", at which case he can surrender without looking like a hideous coward.

I still believe that he's actually hiding outside of Kiev considering how often he's on weblinks in really bare rooms. Notice how he doesn't seem to be out and about on the streets of doing passionate speeches anymore.

I don't take seriously the idea that Zelensky calls the shots in Ukraine. He does what he is told to do by the Oligarchs who have run the country through him. They and their money were safe before the conflict even started. Zelensky is to them just a disposable idiots whose life or death means nothing. If the entire government of Ukraine died tomorrow, the Oligarchs would simply cast new characters into the roles.

If you want an exotic perspective on the US response to the War. My housemate is Iranian - proper Iranian from Tehran, not western-born diaspora. She hates Britain and Israel for deposing the Shah and installing Khomeini (allegedly). She hates the US backed sanctions for making her Dad, who's a software engineer, and Mum, who works in insurance, for making comparatively less than a part-time waiter in the west. She thought for a moment that Biden and the Democrats might reverse the sanctions. But we were talking about the War tonight and she said she wished Trump was still in-charge to deal with the Ukrainian situation, and showed me some video of Biden bimbling about on-stage like a lost lamb.

Whether Trump would have done any better or not I don't know. But I just thought it was an interesting non-western perspective on the western response to the War in Ukraine.

When the BIOLABS stuff came up I figured the Russians would claim that the Ukries were developing pathogens specifically designed to be weaponized against Russians, and the Ukrainians would claim that they were just working on a cancer cure and the Russians destroyed the research for the evulz. edit: and these are just some examples of currently active bugmen in Russia. There are also thousands of larval trust fund babbies studying overseas (whose parents may be normies or oldschool corrupt), and not all of them will settle there - many will return and inherit their parents' offices.

A good rule of thumb is if you see a person getting referred to in writing or credited with a diminutive name, it's a bugman. Misha, Mitya, Masha, Anya, Katya, etc. (Women are more prone to it but men who do it surpass the women in degeneracy; if an organization contains a Mitya, everyone in is has AIDS, but a Katya may be a bog standard thot: a sign of corruption, but not damning.)
Just make sure it's not a normal full name; e.g. Darya, Marya and Natalya are full names; Yulia is a full name, Yulya is a diminutive. You can't tell by sight by the "y" letter, it depends on whether it produces a [j] sound (normal) or not (bugman).

Just don't see an invasion of Taiwan happening. Would be vastly easier for China to take Quemoy and Matsu instead. Not much Taiwan could do about it.



As a side note, why do I keep believing this war is going to be a grind? Surely Zelensky has plans to use Lviv as the new capital should Kyiv fall. Am I wrong? If so, how? Just my gut feeling, the more things I see here.

You assume China cares about how difficult it would be. That's western thinking right there. Same type of logic used by people saying "Russia will never invade Ukraine because X,Y,Z".

China'll just pile bodies and equipment up till they win with sheer force of numbers alone (not to even mention they don't care about bombing the fuck out of the place ahead of time - they can always rebuild later in their mind,), and nobody in the Chinese government will give one single fuck over any of the dead. The literal only thing that has kept China from stepping up is the threat of War with the US since that has an actual chance of causing regime change over there if they lose (the only thing their government actually somewhat fears).

A Taiwan invasion may be a grueling, hellish deathmarch(swim), but it's one China would ultimately "win".

The second they think the US won't get directly involved, or is too weak to actually be effective they're going in. And they've been using their influence to affect the later for the last decade (and it's starting to work).

Western sources say that the Mosin-Nagant is only used as a ceremonial rifle in Russia these days. I wonder if that guy is HQ guard duty or something?

The other possibility is that the separatist forces in Donbas were using alot of them.

Tbh I feel like the government in Kyiv is pretty much the only thing preventing Ukraine from collapsing as it is. Ukraine with the 'capital' of Lviv would be the beginning of the end because it'd leave Russians free access to the actual capital which would be a MAJOR conquest in the war

As Foch stated "Paris is just an expression on a map," Kiev falling means nothing, Ukraine has gone into full insurgency mode and will operate in such a fashion without a central government. Most of these groups like Azov Battalion are almost entirely autonomous as is anyway. Russia is likely fucked into a full war mandating a drive to the Polish and Romanian borders while tard wrangling the insurgency for a decade or more. They must stop the flow of weaponry to the insurgents and the only way they can do that is by sealing the borders, something that the NATO members will foolishly help do, I can say with certainty that Poland will almost certainly start building out trenches and concertina wire the moment the Russians approach the border, it will become a new DMZ like the one between the Korean states, no weaponry will be able to cross the border and it will be Polish troops ensuring it because smuggling will become almost impossible. Romania/Moldova is the wild card as far as border restrictions in such a case, they're so poor I doubt either will be able to close the borders in such a manner.
