The speed with which the entire western world has turned on Russians in the past few weeks has given me whiplash. Not just the Russian government, mind you. The DNC has been blaming the Russian government for everything from unfortified elections to losing the TV remote. Fine. Governments do that. But now the west is assigning collective guilt. Every Russian who has ever existed (including dead ones) is responsible for everything Putin has ever done, and they're being punished accordingly. I don't know another word for this besides racism.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like this is my lifetime, at least in the west. The closest I can think of is maybe Muslims after 9/11, but I was pretty young then and it's hard for me to remember the exact mood. I remember there was plenty of media saying not to lump them all together. Not here. Russians are being talked about like they're almost subhuman, and the entire establishment is fully on board.

I know it's cool and edgy to hate tiny hats and make Holocaust jokes on KF, but I'm really wondering... is this how things started for Jews in Nazi Germany?

I'd say chances for any camps are currently nonexistent, this could change if the situation escalates into a proper war with western boots on the ground however.
Of course, with Muslims you still had to consider racism, they're brown(ish) after all, can't go too far. Russians are a bit too pale for that so they're definitely going to take a heavier verbal/virtual beating because there's nothing holding people back.

Probably not. Germany was not unique in their hatred of Jews at the time, and even Marx was incredibly antisemitic as it was just trendy at the time, but the Nazi regime still had to be covert to some extent about what it was really doing with the Jews. Then again we have become a country with much more influence within our society from the Arab and African world which has no issue going into full genocide when it wants as we saw them do with Armenians and South African farmers, so maybe somewhere like Chicago or New York City will have something rather fucked.

The worst things the Russians can do are cut off energy to Europe or use nukes.

The first thing while very inconvenient and expensive is not catastrophic. There are many other sources of energy including but not limited to the UK/Gulf oil, Nuclear stations, renewable energy etc.

The second is the problem that if they try that, the rest of the world won't hesitate to unload everything they've got on Russia to make sure in the Nuclear end times the Russians get the honor of being amongst the first to die horribly and their civilization utterly destroyed. So (hopefully), they won't.

The Muslims didn't have such a hard time because unlike the Russians they CAN make the lives of westerners very difficult with few consequences. Bush and Blair tried but where Putin is a very visibly central target who has power, wants to keep it, and will consider risks the Middle East has enough crazed fanatics for whom this doesn't even register.

The Russians could be but are not currently a viable threat to NATO. The only two great military strengths they have are the nukes, of which while powerful would see them destroyed, and cyber warfare which while annoying isn't as immediately threatening. We've all seen while large in numbers, and with things like their railway corps could be a very difficult adversary on the defensive within their own borders the Russian army is not ready for a war with a Western power. Ukraine isn't a "western" army by any count, or even anything close to resembling a "military power" but they've handled almost everything Russia, a former "superpower" has thrown at them.

There's no reason to persecute people who are not a major threat and there's no real need to use them as a scapegoat either like Hitler did the Jews because the West doesn't feel like it lost the cold war and they're correct that on this matter they are morally right so no excuses or handwaving is needed.

First thing is first, read up on the Niihau Incident for an understanding of what drove internment in the US. It wasn't really a part of the conversation after Pearl Harbor. It was only after treason/betrayal by Japanese Nationals that it became a demand. It was also a damn sight different than the Holocaust. The Holocaust and those invested in its current public perception try to have you forget the 1918 revolution in Germany. This is what cost the Germans WWI. The Jewish-led revolution sought a genocidal takeover of Germany that would have made Russian Bolsheviks look sane. These actions start a direct line from failed revolution, to corrupt Wiemar, and finally to a demoralized population sick of manipulation.

Unless and until we see clear actions against us directly by Russian Nationals/their agents it is unlikely to happen.

America won't do internment of the Russians after 2 events:

1. Reagan officially apologized for Japanese internment. Then he signed in the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, giving the Japs respirations (which he shouldn't have done but whatever).

2. 9/11 Attacks killed more Americans than Pearl Harbor and even then, the worst thing Muslims experienced was mild racism. Bush even called Islam a "religion of peace" (which he shouldn't have done but whatever).

Until Russia blows up 2,000 Americans, Russian-Americans won't have to worry about internment or racism. But even if everyone turns racist against Russians, I doubt anyone could even tell them apart from other whites.
