The last time we averted atomic war was in 1983, when the Soviet Union talked itself into believing Nato was plotting a first strike on Russia. A lot of people know the abbreviated version, Soviet early warning radar was buggy and spat out false indications of ICBM launches from the US, one heroic Russkie looked at the data while every alarm around him was blaring imminent death and standing orders said NUKE THE CAPITALIST PIGDOGS NOW, and thought "nyet, it'll be fine".
The broader story is the USSR had already decided the capitalists were going to try to exterminate them. Based on this faulty premise, they ran a massive intelligence op for months, which sucked in a bunch of unrelated data - mostly harmless in itself - but when looked at in paranoid mode, all added up to support the preconceived notion that Ronnie Raygun was about to let the nukes fly. They were doing dumb stuff such as watching the English Ministry of Defence building to see if the lights were still on after normal office hours (surely a sign the imperialists are plotting something!) and putting that into their data matrix without considering it was just the cleaners doing their normal jobs. But when a bureaucracy decides something is true, nobody's going to thank or reward you for bringing them info that makes them look wrong.
Worth noting that, evil as the USSR was, they don't seem to have ever intended to strike first. They wanted to be ready for a Western attack, and swiftly counterpunch.
This time, they're not paranoid. They know Nato really is out to get them. Arming their enemies, trying to destroy their economy, and ostentatiously demonizing Russians in general are all hostile acts. (Yes, they invaded Ukraine, but this is how they'll see things, nobody thinks they're the bad guy). In the last 48 hours alone, the US, UK and Ukraine have floated two stories:
* Russia is about to do a chemical or biological false flag
* Russia is about to do an atomic false flag using Chernobyl as a dirty bomb
If either of these happen, Nato will be directly at war with Russia. Brandon will not be able to stop the people in DC already demanding war with Russia. Cooler heads will suddenly be suspected Russian agents. If Nato engages Russia in a shooting war, the latter won't back down, because they'll interpret this as the final war to destroy the Motherland their predecessors in 1983 feared, and Putin's regime can't back down anyway, it'd mean death or jail for a lot of powerful men. A lot of Russian aircraft and armor and troop formations will be swiftly destroyed in the first 48 hours of Nato strikes, so they'll react by firing tactical nukes at Nato bases in Poland and Germany. Maybe also sink a British aircraft carrier or two.
Tac nukes make further escalation to big boy nukes almost inevitable. Everybody will be operating on fear, hate and panic. Not fun.
Nuclear war isn't likely, but it's more likely now than it's ever been in any Kiwi Farmer's lifetime. Thankfully we already have a kickass soundtrack for this situation from the early 80's.

Technically it is a fucked up pseudo-religious meritocracy. AKA Crony-Communism. The keyword when it comes to government decisions is saving face. I don't really judge someone for wanting to flee a war zone, I think that's perfectly understandable, but the hypocrisy here pisses me off. Actual men would be shamed for deserting but you get to be stunning and brave.
