To be fair to Pat, you actually kinda do, because the smaller cross-section you have, the less chance you have of being hit by an asteroid. And techically if you're going like 95-99% the speed of light (which you realistically couldn't but it's still possible under known physics) you'd start getting drag on your ship because of hydrogen atoms (and also specks of dust hitting like bombs) so your ship becomes more efficient if it has wings.

That said, Pat's ships are terrible designs from both a hard SF perspective and an artistic perspective. The biggest thing is why there's a giant "gravity well projector" (i.e. not hard science fiction) thing on the back but the "beamed energy receiver" is on the front instead of logically sticking it on the back since it's the biggest target for a beam of energy. Maybe he really was trying to design buttplugs and sell to the Jack Murphy crowd or something, and just added some science fictiony-sort of labels on them. What a joke. Pig T. I took a second look at the spaceship drawings and the labels have me howling. "cooling fins" has images of that Simpsons episode where Homer designs a nucular plant going through my head. "I took the existing plant and added fins. I also think this racing stripe looks pretty sharp"

The cooling fins are, technically, ok, even though they're properly called radiators and not "cooling fins". Ships in space need some way to get rid of waste heat.

The bigger issue is, IMO, mixing hard SF elements like radiators with stuff like "gravity well projectors" and the like. It's not impossible to do that, H Paul Honsinger did it and it worked out fine. The issue is it requires a small amount of talent, which Rick doesn't have.
