I’ve had similar thoughts about under what conditions Russia would decide to nuke Ukraine.

On one hand, I don’t think Putin can just throw his hands up and walk away at this point. Ukraine would want everything put back pre-invasion, “status quo” - which is simply not something Putin can do for a variety of reasons. He needs something at least for optics to justify this war and claim a victory at home. Rather that’s territory annexation or promises of no NATO, I don’t know.

I also believe that Russia’s economy is probably fucked for a very long time due to both corruption and sanctions. Not only are Russians missing out on their McBurgers and TikTok, their sons are dying violently and quality of life is dropping. But again, Putin must get something or else it’s all in vain - he can’t stop now.

Facing heavy loss of life and increased economic pressure with no way to back out, hitting the nuclear button and glassing one Ukrainian city seems somewhat reasonable on its face. Choose the city strategically, though, as you don’t want to level a city of cultural or strategic importance to your own people.

The only thing is though, it would be an option that would shock the world and set up a crazy precedent. Im not sure if the remaining countries willing to do business with Russia could continue to do so once the modern nuclear precedent has been set in a way that is an offensive attack. It would essentially accelerate economic suicide for Russia and turn them into more of pariah state. I think. It would also justify every other country in the world to accelerate their nuclear programs for self defense reasons - meaning the end of humanity inches towards its radioactive destiny.

Western glowies should know that regime changing Putin will not be as simple as their middle eastern exploits. You can’t just take a pic of Putin getting a lap dance and send it to media outlets while watching the football match on tv - never to hear from him again. Russia seems somewhat politically stable as most opposition has been killed off or corrupted. Regime change is unlikely.
