Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

why? I don’t even think he actually likes you and at this point it’s pretty much a one way street when it comes to helping each other out. It’s always you having to give him aide and he never does anything in return.
Why are you trying to talk him out of helping his good friend? One of the few people who have remained loyal to him. The way I see it Ethan bails Richard out, Richard owes Ethan. Meaning he will have to stream, meaning more lulz. The more Richard has to face the public the funnier.

They can compare late books and projects they haven't finished yet. And laugh.

That book is going to get funded whether Ethan shills it or not. It’s only 500 dollars away from the goal. Ethan would only be wasting his time if he does a stream on Zack’s book. I’m actually enjoying the downward Zacks been on for the past two years where it is getting harder and harder for him to fund a book. At this point, he’s barely going to scrape by into a successful campaign. And with three or four other unfulfilled books, this one is sure to be late as well. So the next time he tries to do a money grab with a new hairbrained idea as the premise for the book, it will be fun to see him squirm as the book doesn’t even come close to being fulfilled.

He had to make a whole ass video explaining his rationale for changing the colors, which boiled down to "A much better comic used this color scheme and I will shamelessly ape it while completely fucking up the execution". He made no apologies to backers who'd already paid for a different looking book, instead giving them the standard "trust me, you'll love it" line he spouts with all of his questionable ideas.
Did it ever got through to him that the only reason that much better comic book looked like the way it looked because it glows under black light, not because Jim Rugg took some lsd and said fuck it?

Maybe Ethan can convince his simple minded audience that the mean dog lady Vikki is trying to cancel Simple Zack. He can take the Orwellian concept of the Two Minutes of Hate and stretch it out into a 5+ hour live stream, maybe he'll make 20k!

So if we go all WW3 on the Russia/China/India Axis powers, do you think Sciverfrog part 3 will come out by the end of the decade? Ethan is converting the blood of paypiggies into money more efficiently than the space wasps turn blood into honey.

It's not just about the glowing part. Rugg also made a version using a muted form of the same palette on paper resembling old newsprint. It wasn't just that Rugg wanted to make a blacklight reactive comic, he wanted the book to visually evoke the counterculture of the 70s. He drew Octobriana with that color scheme in mind, which is why he used such thick lines and heavy blacks.

Zack just thought it looked neat so he ripped it off. In the video he made explaining 499's color change, he shows a part of Rugg's process zine where Rugg lays out the exact palette he used for Octobriana and Zack straight up says he just used the color picker in Clip Studio to duplicate it. The part he forgot about was using heavy blacks. Narwhal doesn't use a heavy line or really much black at all in his work so the shit looked weird because it wasn't drawn to look like that. Zack said since the story featured teenagers, he thought the colors conveyed a sense of immaturity. This is probably just Zack boomering and identifying teen culture as it was in the late 80s and early 90s when everything was fluorescent/neon/radical.

In short, Rugg put thought into the colors and Zack didn't.

Anybody fluent in crazy want to translate this one for me
I thank he's trying to register an objection with the fact that despite Vikki's menopausal meltdown some people here wanna make clear they're not eager to give TUG or Martina a redemption arc.

I can sympathize with those who argue X doesn't absolve Y. Comicsgate has a a long and storied history that not everybody understands. I'm just here to laugh at cowish behavior. And we've seen enough of that from both sides these past few months.

Should I do it?
Logically, no.

For the lulz, sure, I guess.

Maybe Ethan can convince his simple minded audience that the mean dog lady Vikki is trying to cancel Simple Zack.
I don't care too much what Ethan has to say about Vikki. That's a war that been going on forever. Sans a brief truce during FROG's involvement in the Poulter lawsuit.

I do find it far more interesting that people that were once in Vikki's inner circle, and not plugged into Ethan, are starting to distance themselves from her now though.

It wasn't just that Rugg wanted to make a blacklight reactive comic, he wanted the book to visually evoke the counterculture of the 70s.
I think @The Bovinian Derivative asked the wrong question. What he should have asked was:

Did it ever get through to Zack that it's not the goddamned 70s anymore?

And that's a rhetorical question.

In short, Rugg put thought into the colors and Zack didn't.
Rugg also made something that was a product of its time. Art styles change.

Nobody I know that lived through the 70s thinks that color garish scheme should make a comeback. For example, there is not a single person I know who wants avacado colored kitchen appliances. I have to imagine you will NOT find them in Frigidaire's 2022 product catalog.

Zack didn't ask any questions. The fact that Jim Rugg was using a callback to 70s pop culture to tell a story about a character rooted in 70s counterculture didn't occur to him.

Yes, art styles change. That's why Octobriana was specifically done as a one-off project to evoke a retro feel, not necessarily to start some kind of resurgence of 70s styles culture-wide. Thankfully blacklight only reacts with certain colors and Rugg didn't have to make a cover with that weird paper my grandma lined her cupboards with that had the brown and orange mushrooms on it.

He never does. Zack just... does. It's why he generates so many laughs.

Like I've always said, I think compulsive behavior from his ADHD drives him more than anything.

Well, Zack is trying to do something from the 80s, isn't he? Isn't that when 499 is supposed to be set?

Regardless, it begs the question why you would use Octobriana as inspiration for anything not set in the 70s? I don't think comics in the 80s normally used that color scheme. The countercultre shit was dying out, and Reagan's straight-laced America was taking over. Yeah, neon was a popular fashion item among youth in the 80s, but I don't recall comics using it that much. Mainly because I don't think the print paper commonly used really supported it.

Looks like EVS didn’t take our advice…

This is an ongoing stream. Do you have a timestamp, or a TL;DR on what he said?

Right around ten minutes in he starts talking why he is supporting Zack’s book. He says that he knows that he and Zack are going separate ways but, he is still going to support Zack’s book Because Zack is the reason why he is CG in the first place. We also find out that Zack’s book hit it’s target goal just barely without any help from Ethan. Several people sent superchats saying that they won’t back anymore of Zack’s books because of they feel like he is walking away from CG and because he backed down from Mark Waide. There was also a super chat where a person voiced their displeasure about Zack’s book being based on current politics instead of providing the escapism they were looking for.

Zack's IGG has only increased about $700? sine the stream started? Has Frog lost his touch?

No. It's just that most of CG said 'Enough' with Zak. He walked away from CG and while his past vids and anti SJW fight was and always will be appreciated, bailing on the Waid suit and being an apologist for half the crap in the mainstream lately isn't something EVS can overcome. No one is gonna bail on EVS over it. He's just trying to help his friend.

Nah. EVS promoting your comic is still a surefire way to get backers. People just don't give a fuck about Zack anymore.

I think it’s a combination of Zack walking away from CG and him selling a shitty political comic. Which is the exact opposite of what he stood for in 2017.
Everything about Zack is the opposite of what he stood for in 2017. I believe his remaining audience is sort of backing him reflexively, thinking he's still the same guy.

He is, and that's admirable. But as someone just said, it's become a one way street.

Even now, EVS is EFAPing Zack's latest video at 2x speed just to pretend Zack is talking to him. In this video, Zack refers to the CG method of livestreaming the end of a campaign as a "Jerry Lewis telethon" and he's not interested, which Ethan rightly takes exception to, pointing out that this approach got Zack his only $400k campaign whereas now Zack is back at square one with a campaign that doesn't look like it'll break $30k.

Good for EVS. Somebody close to Zack needed to say it. Too bad he will never listen.
