The End of Funimation - Cucked to Death by Crunchyroll

Honestly, It is amazing that a company that should have died years ago with their own failings ended up buys a company that did just die because of its failings

Like it's a wonder that Sony are still around given all the shit they've pulled. Sure it's nothing like Funimation and its "woke culture" and degeneration regarding its stable of voice actors. But on a purely business level, Sony's fucked up big in almost all their sectors, and the fact that they decided to merge these two companies together only means they'll fuck up more since they still have Aniplex, and it'll only be a matter of time before Crunchy gets rolled into that (or vice-versa).

And to those talking about the voice actors being out of work, I will let you know that Funi's been pulling more and more from the LA voice pool in recent titles, and some even have New York and Canadian actors popping in for a stint. it's likely that this could continue given we're in the age of remote recording... presuming Crunchy or Sony are willing to pony up the cash to continue doing this.

Great, just what we need, more soulless voice acting from hundreds of miles away from people who may never have even met their castmembers.
I mean Anime was already pretty soulless even in its heyday, so if anything, it'll just be the same, just with more countries involved.

Would laugh if they decided to just rope in those Odex fuckers or even actual Japanese VAs into more of their work for "diversity" though.

Identity or not they fucked up in various ways like their competitors, it's all a matter of being objective. ADV did have gems like Cromartie and Golden Boy, so I guess they knew how to do comedy alright, but they aren't worth serenading.
I can't agree with you at all there, I loved the whole vibe of ADV.

Even the fact that their headquarters were located in a strip mall in a dumpy part of Houston adds to the mystique, it's like somewhere out there below the surface of the banality of modern America was a place devoted to the exciting, colorful world of Japanese animation!

As I said before the main appeal for me of anime and manga was specifically it in the context of the US culture, Toonami, Adult Swim, US publishers, US magazines, US fandom and cons (how it used to be), the manga section at your local bookstore etc.

Make no mistake, fansubs have their place too, I've seen stuff I've loved that never officially was released in the US and especially now more than ever fansubs are important as US publishers go Woke, I'm just saying if the US scene has gone to shit than we've lost something cool, like we've lost so many cool things.

What would be a US publisher you would consider worth "serenading"?

And CPM really did die because of a lost loan (as per Justin Sevakis' words on ANN). Their catalog however certainly didn't help (how many people are going to buy ratty looking DVDs of Project A-ko, Detonator Orgun or Legend of the Dragon Kings?) and O'Donnell's quote about not appealing to girls is laughable considering CPM had the license to Utena. I guess he just couldn't adapt that anime was skewing younger, despite there still being college age fans of it.

He bought the goddamn rights to MD Geist. I hope that CPM's ownership of it and their dissolution isn't what's holding up a re-release.
Sevakis' talking about his time at the company was fascinating, I remember even having a few private message discussions with him about it.

I now interrupt the off-topic nostalgia sperging of ADV to bring us back on topic of Funimation's demise, the dissolution has started.
I recently checked the LinkedIn of Crunchyroll's resident snake-in-the-grass, Adam Sheehan, to see where he is sitting during this merge.
Turns out he got promoted a year ago to Senior Events Producer, but that's not what caught my eye.
Here in this archived version, the Funimation logo can be seen:

LOL! Cucked!

Anime News Network did a PR piece for the Crunchyrollover. Funimation subtitlers were paid more than their counterparts, and one source was told just before Christmas that they would no longer be receiving any more work.

Sounds like they've already done some trimming.
I wonder how much trimming has happened?
The sycophants on Twitter blustered that nothing will change, but it really shows their ignorance about corporate mergers when things like this come out.

Well, the leftists at Funi and Crunchy are all Globalists, right? So clearly they must enjoy competing with the entire world for who will do the most work for the least pay. So it should be no surprise that between Funi and Crunchy they're going to fire the redundant workers who make more than the others.

Should be funny to see how this all shakes out. Sony now owns 3 Anime localization teams -- Aniplex, Crunchyroll, and Funimation. God only know how much of that is going to be pruned off.

The one I'm looking forward to is HR. Sony has a monolithic HR department that probably dwarfs Funimation's total number of staff. That means they don't NEED the Funimation HR goons -- the same goons that have been protecting people like Rial and Sabat and were weaponized against Vic. What happens when they vanish and the Sony guys review paperwork, policies, and practices going on at Funimation? Bye bye casting couch, if nothing else.

What are you talking about? Funimation DID NOT HAVE AN HR DEPARTMENT. Why do you think they shot it up to Tammi Denbow, who was in SONY'S HR Department? It's because they don't have a local HR Department.

... Jesus christ, you're right. I had completely forgot about that.

LOL a couple visitors to this thread suggested as much, that Funimation would get MORE work since CrunchyRoll "outsourced everything." Turns out CrunchyRoll worked on the cheap, and who wins with corporate when they decide which subbing department to axe, the one who does a high volume of similar work for less cost or the one who does it for more? It was just pure damage control. This won't be the end of it either. While the dubbing may be more safe for them right now, I could see it getting restructured in some weird way by the coporate overlords who obviously had little vested interest in the brand of Funimation.

I don't really understand these people that are still so invested in these companies in 2022 to go out and defend them like this. Like I can understand the consumer who just wants to get the product and doesn't think about it more than that, but if we learned anything it's that none of these people actually care about the fans. May as well be defending McDonald's or Walmart or something. It's fine if you shop there, but at least be realistic about it instead of thinking these people are doing some kind of stupid charity service for anime fans.

Best case I can think of, both Funi and Crunchy end up under Aniplex because three companies, plus A-1 Pictures (the animation studio owned by Aniplex Japan) is incredibly redundant to keep around. I can see Crunchy adopting the Aniplex moniker at some point, while Funi just vanishes into the ether entirely.

This thread doesn't have enough salt, so here's one post I found by some anime forum lifer that has probably been posting on different anime message boards for 20 years. Imagine being this invested in the brand name of a home video label that a corporate restructuring a lot of people saw coming is some huge paradigm shift that has turned your world upside down. LOL
