I used to think this, but there's just no way he would come out and say it was all an experiment after it was revealed that he was naked in the changing rooms with women. He can show off his penis when claiming to be trans, but the moment he admits he's a man, he'll be labeled a pervert and would possibly even face legal trouble for it.
I don't know if William is APG or what since he doesn't really act like one, and there isn't a lot of information about him before he trooned out.
What I did find points to him being insecure. His older brother was a great swimmer (actually won races), as well as a model student. You can find his older brother mentioned in the school paper. He worked on robots and later graduated and went on to get an impressive job at Lockheed and Martin. This was the only definite information I could find.
I found other information that I'm 85% sure is true, but I won't post since I'm not 100%.
Point is, what little I did find paints the picture of William living in his older brother's shadow. He may have seen trooning out as a way to excuse his underachieving behavior and also as a way to finally "win" something. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have worked out like he wanted. He's getting attention and recognition, but not the respectable kind. His parents are never mentioned and aren't out and proud about their "daughter".

If I recall correctly, William was still hanging out with his male team and joking with them at swim meets. Some pictures do show him talking with male swimmers. But who knows if that means they are actual friends or not. Maybe they have always found him annoying and are glad he's off their team. It's really hard to get a read on him since he is keeping such a low profile, and if he has any friends, they aren't speaking out either.

the thing that bothers me the most about this lunacy is that troons actively target and groom other vulnerable people, and their favorite targets are children. It’s like any cult - get them when they’re young and you will have a much better chance of keeping them within the group. I especially feel so much horror and sympathy for the kids with troon parents. How many birthdays, graduations, weddings and other assorted milestones they use to “come out” to other people as trans.
