I love how the Western coverage of this conflict is at odds with one another. One day Russia is the laughing stock of the world, not even able supply an army in a neighboring country and being decimated by the heroic Ukrainians.... Oh, but if they win in Ukraine the Russians are also going to steam roll though Poland, Germany, and France before dropping Nukes on America. It's such blatant fearmongering and attention whoring.

Even if you take a generally neutral approach to reading about the war, I don't think anyone is going to argue that Russia has not had a good time. They're obviously still taking territory but at an extremely slow pace with higher than expected casualties. They've also been very careful about the threats they give to NATO and non-NATO countries - IE: They're not going to willingly enter a conflict with a NATO country.

TBH there's only one of two ways an attack on, say, Poland will work out. They try a conventional push and get flattened by the Western military or they launch a nuke to open, at which point it's already over.

I think India would probably be the most nervous over it. They really wouldn't want the Pakistanis having any sort of precedent for thinking using a nuke will work out ok.

I don't think China would be super thrilled either. Ignoring the fact they have a weird nuclear umbrella treaty with Ukraine (Not that they'd uphold it), the fact one neighboring country would nuke another neighboring country probably wouldn't make them feel super happy. It would be an unnecessary strain on a relationship that Russia can't afford to strain. If a nuke is to be used by Russia in Ukraine it would never be publicly acknowledged I feel.

i'm not so sure about that anymore
maybe the intent is to create emigration pressure on the russian upper middle class via increasing economic stress and induce large scale brain drain this way. we already heard about people, especially young and middle aged professionals with science and tech qualifications, leaving russia in large numbers since the war began. if this exodus continues, maybe even increases over time, it will cause serious long term damage not only to the economy but also to state institutions.

that's the theory. maybe it won't play out like that but i am no longer sure that sanctions won't accomplish anything.
