President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

The TikTok Reddit shit was in Yavoriv, Lviv Oblast.
The tiktoker was arrested for filming Retroville, which is in Kyiv.

Two separate incidents.
My mistake. I thought you were talking about the arrested tiktoker. My bad.

Russia trying to rebrand McDonald's franchises
My preferred audio track for the clip
That's fake as shit. You can see reflections of passing cars behind the banner, and no reflection of the banner at all in the window. The sluggish camera panning, to try and hide the compositing effects, gives it away as well.

I thought that might be the case, but this is what they're actually unironically planning to do

"You WILL die for Israel's interests"

No no NO. Heck off global homo you will not make me fight. No step on snek.
You know autistically I just saw the word draft and the comments talking about draft that I missed the part about conscientious objection. I am still concerned for any non religious bros here but thank God my religion is super anti war. I feel a bit better for myself at least.

Hope it doesn't come to draft though.

Are you talking about the article I linked? In that case the way article is worded makes it seem that it wasn't a "known military location".
It was a shopping mall, though, not an old training center.
Think we are getting crossed wires here, the shopping centre absolutely wasn't a known military location - so that TikToker is likely at fault.

I was referring to the incident in that Tim Pool clip, it was a known training area and training centre. They are claiming the Russians struck it due to someone Geo tagging it. This might be true - but there is no evidence that I have seen.

God damn have the Russians always been this retarded? Nukes really are the only thing they have really going for them
The US/NATO likely sent in all sorts of glowies as volunteers or whatever in addition to helping with intelligence/supplies. So the problems Russia has may look more exaggerated when juxtaposed against the support given to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, there's talk defense minister Sergei Shoigu has gone missing.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense Head Sergei Shoigu reportedly missing, hasn't made public appearances in 12 days

The head of Russia's Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu has not been seen in public for 12 days and is possibly missing, according to reports and messages circulated on Telegram on Wednesday.
Investigative journalists from the Russian independent news outlets Mediazona and Agentstvo claimed on Wednesday that the normally media savvy Shoigu has not appeared in public since March 11.
There are rumors that Shoigu is in poor health and is experiencing heart problems, while other messages are swirling online suggest Shoigu might have been fired from the ministry and is on house arrest, according to Russian journalists. Fox News has not yet independently verified these allegations.
Shoigu was last seen in public on March 11 presenting awards to Russian troops occupying Ukraine during what Russian President Vladimir Putin dubbed a "special military operation" but what the West has condemned as a full-scale invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine.
The Kremlin said in a statement on its website on March 18 that Shoigu was present during a meeting Putin called with members of his security council to discuss "the progress of the special operation in Ukraine," but no photos or videos of the meeting were posted online.
The Russian state-run Channel 1 aired a broadcast that same day, March 18, about Shoigu presenting military awards "today" but used an image of the ceremony that had already been posted on the Ministry of Defense’s website seven days earlier on March 11, according to Agentstvo.
Russian journalist Dmitry Treschanin, of Mediazona, noted that Russian state-run news agency RIA also hasn’t reported about Shoigu since March 11. He questioned whether Shoigu was in Chernobaevka, located outside of Kherson, the first major city to be occupied by Russian forces on March 2.
"Listen, the great PR minister Shoigu has been out of public space since March 11th," Treschanin tweeted on Wednesday. "ELEVEN DAYS OF WAR, we do not have the head of the Ministry of Defense."
Moscow Times reporter Jake Cordell tweeted on Wednesday about "lots of Telegram chatter today about the whereabouts of Russia’s defense minister Sergei Shoigu," noting that Shoigu has not been seen with Putin since a meeting in Moscow on Feb. 27, just three days after beginning the invasion of Ukraine. It was at that meeting when Putin ordered Shoigu and the chief of the general staff of the armed forces of Russia, Valery Gerasimov, to put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert.
Russian newspaper Pravda, citing the Russian investigative outlets, reported that Gerasimov also hasn’t made any public appearances since March 11. According to Agenstvo, Shoigu has made media appearances a priority since becoming Minister of Defense in 2012 and had appeared on television nearly every day since the start of the invasion of Ukraine up until March 11.
This comes as Russian forces on the ground have stalled after suffering heavy casualties, while continuing their bombardment and air strikes targeting major population centers in Ukrainian cities.
NATO said Wednesday that between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine.
Putin, meanwhile, has reportedly been conducting a witch hunt within his own inner circle, growing "incandescent" over the belief that those close to him are leaking information about his military plans to the West. Ukrainian officials have so far claimed to have killed at least five Russian generals. Foreign Policy Magazine reported that Russian generals are being forced to advanced positions on the battlefields, leaving them exposed to attack, as they struggle to get orders to disorganized conscripted troops on the front lines.

That account makes "in case of a draft" posts every couple of months, the earliest I found being in July before the Ukraine thing started. You also have to consider that the US military likely isn't understaffed enough to when a draft would be started (according to Wikipedia, we have the third largest military in the world after China and India with near 800k reserves). Regardless of that original poster's intent (perhaps an intern), still ominous timing.

Not impossible, but I would suggest this is fairly limited. If Western forces get captured that opens a huge can of worms.

My bet is that Western Forces, SF etc are in the West of the country training Ukrainian volunteers up to a good standard, and regular forces on the use of new equipment coming in.

This frees up Ukrianian troops from that job, and develops new skillsets.

The Roman army invented a certain kind of punishment which was used when there were large numbers of soldiers that needed to be kept in line. Each man in each cohort would draw lots, and the losers — approximately 1/10th of the unit — would be executed by their comrades. They were usually beaten to death. Our current use of the term decimation comes from this practice.

The Romans did see some success with it, such as in the slave revolt led by Spartacus, but it was ultimately abandoned because it both depleted morale (as soldiers generally dislike having to beat their comrades to death) as well as the power of the fighting force. But they did recognize that an army that loses even as little as 10% of their comrades can run into some serious problems.

Also, based Ukrainian army for making the troons stay in the country instead of fleeing like the true and honest women they say they are. We all already know troons are useless in war, but there are certainly plenty of elderly people in basements and bombed-out apartment buildings they could help out if they really cared so much about their own country.

I wonder what every happen to him? I'm sure he's fine.....

This is just an opinion piece, but I still find it funny that the right wing editorial outlet is essentially arguing for Ukraine to surrender to help Africa. Also they misread the statement from Zelensky about NATO.
The head of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization recently painted a frightening picture of the effects of the Russian-Ukraine conflict on global food supplies.

Consider wheat. Wheat is a staple food for more than 35 percent of the world’s population. Fifty countries depend on Russia and Ukraine for 30 percent or more of their wheat supply. Many of those countries are low-income, food deficit countries in North Africa, Asia, or the Middle East.

Egypt, Turkey, Bangladesh, and Iran buy more than 60 percent of their wheat from Russia and Ukraine. Lebanon, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya, and Pakistan also rely heavily on those two countries for their wheat supply. A continuation of the conflict could severely disrupt agricultural production in both Ukraine and Russia.
Especially since just a few months ago the outlet was cheering on sanctions on both Russia and Iran.
I wouldn't think they'd care that much for Africans.

They are not wrong. Russia has the manpower and material to grind Ukraine into dust.

So what, the initial invasion plan was shit. Every mistake is a learning opportunity and eventually Russia will commit enough men and supplies to grind Ukrainian resistance down to where they just want to surrender.

Some might claim that holding out for longer may improve ceasefire terms but that is predicated on a Western model of a vulnerable politician being suspectable to political pressure. Putin and this new Russia is not that type of animal. Putin had been painted into a corner by the failed invasion and he cannot go to his people with weak terms.
