The big advantage of hypersonics is covering a lot of distance fast.
A high subsonic cruise missile takes forever to reach the intended target, which means that if the ship you're targeting is moving, the search area where that ship could possibly be at the time the missile arrives is too large to be covered by the missile's own sensors so it can do the terminal tracking and maneuvering autonomously. You're tracking a ship through satellite? Remember how your satellite will be spending more time completing an orbit around the planet rather than looking at the ship you want. You're tracking the ship by aircraft? Yeah, a F-35 has a combat range of like 600 nautical miles, good fucking luck hanging around.
The big selling point of hypersonics is that if you can get the missile to cover that distance >5 times faster, you've solved the issue of enemy ships using time and distance as protection. They're not an unstoppable silver bullet against ships, they essentially make it viable to hit ships at a longer distance than naval aircraft can hit you.

This is also exactly how you blow up a viaduct that you're not supposed to be blowing up in minecraft. Put a bunch of explosives between the abutments and the deck. You can get them from a quarry. The explosion cracks the deck from the abutment and lifts it into the air a little bit, causing the whole thing to be irreaparably destroyed. Best to get it with a train on the bridge, but then you run the risk of enemy EOD finding your work. Dropping it without breaking the rails is almost as good because the track circuit is still intact, preventing the railroad from detecting that trouble is ahead. If you think enemy patrols won't be a problem, you can rig a detonator using a car alarm that will sense that the train is vibrating the bridge. Just make sure to include an interlock so you don't blow yourself up first. Be sure to wear a hoodie and sunglasses so nobody knows who you are when you do your little project to help save the environment.
