As far as I understood, there is no difference except in name. I don't suffer from either disorder and if we're to accept what troons say (which we shouldn't, but it's 2022) they're different and GID isn't a valid diagnosis to (most) troons. Then add in the mix of tucutes or people like Kevin that misunderstand or completely ignore dysphoria = trans, there's even more confusion.

There was a really good paper linked somewhere in either the Kevin Gibes thread or maybe Jonathan Yaniv's (the biggest troon lolcows whose threads I've read anyway) that discussed GID/gender dysphoria, but sadly I've lost it. Of course, it was written by a True and Honest believer of science so your mileage may vary if you wanted the troon explanation.

I'm not an expert, but I assume the difference is that you can have gender dysphoria without having any intention of transitioning, while someone who has created a cross-gender identity will likely at one point transition (or at least regularly cross-dresses and "performs" in some sort of social way in that role). Given that he's over 30 and still a PhD candidate tells me through my past PL experience that he isn't doing anything groundbreaking in his field, he's just hiding out in grad school. Eventually he'll pass the threshold of time that you have to finish the program (usually about 6-8 years) and then they'll boot his ass to the curb.

The thing about academia is that it's like trying to break into hollywood. For every one PhD student whose papers get traction, there's tens of thousands of others who flame out or are essentially paying tuition to scream into the void. But I guess that's the point of graduate studies is to break you...you get there with this big-ass dream of taking your pet research project to the next level, get on your knees and kiss buttcheeks to get little scrimps and scraps of research dollars to fund it from apathetic PIs, and eventually you find out there's some rich-ass trust fund kid in Stanford or UCLA who is doing exactly what you're doing but better because they have endless family money to finance it, and nobody cares about you - the kid from budget state university who is trying to play second fiddle.
