I'll go with the former considering how he seems to treat identities like pants, even recently saying "yeah I tried to go by they/them once but everyone kept using she/her so I just gave up and went back".

It's just like driving. No matter how much you're in the right, you never want to crash into an idiot driver, so it's best to compensate for them even if they are in the wrong. Similarly no matter how "transphobic" it might be to disclose you're trans you should still tell them anyway unless you deliberately want to get hurt.
