I tried to watch it but could barely get past the intro. First question was how his channel started and he went into the pre-fab "I wanted to give my degree away to the people for free" bit, while also explaining how at the time nobody else was making philosophy videos on YouTube. The entire concept "didnt exist" until he came up with it, apparently. Anyway I was coming here to see if anyone else posted highlights; thank you @esmeggs for that.

So, the bit about the dress....holy crap lol. I think most viewers of TFD will take it positively because they'll assume it's just a cute little anecdote about his transition instead of literally being the entire point of the transition. There's no depth or rawness or realness to any of it and it's been handled in the the most insincere and self-aggrandizing way possible since he came out. It's not about identity at all; it's about how the pretty clothes and all the new attention makes him feel.

Yes Olly, more people are being more negative towards you because a.) your platform across all medias- ie: your "reach"- increased significantly after coming out, and b.) you can't stop being an over-the-top narcissistic dick for even a few days.

It's partially a function of how we classify and report hate crime statistics. If you take self-reporting hate crime data at face value, the most open and tolerant societies in the world have the highest hate crime rates because the people who live in these societies are of course more sensitive to it and so report it more. By this logic, somewhere like Saudi Arabia would be troon paradise.

You're forgetting one exception - "hey why don't we cast one of these characters with a trans actress? We'll get a tonne of PR buzz for having an 'open' casting call and hiring a trans woman to play a cis character". I doubt there'll be many shows like that but I would be shocked if this isn't an idea that hasn't already been toyed with in an office somewhere.

I really wouldn't be surprised. Black actors play white parts in film/TV very frequently these days; regardless of whether you think this is a good thing or not, troons playing female parts is clearly the logical next step.

Seriously that's the thing that really drives me fucking insane about this line of thought, we basically have Oliver right here out right admitting that the facile, surface level elements of femininity are what really attracted him to becoming trans, and that's hardly unusual, I've listened to a huge amount of stories of trans people over the years and almost all the time this idea that wearing the pretty dress revealed to them that they are in fact a true woman is out there front and centre in their understanding of womanness.

And yet to suggest that this is at best a ridiculously flawed understanding of what it means to be a woman that is really quite insulting towards the experiences and existence of actual women is seen as a horrible thing to say that victimizes trans women. But further than that I always hear people like this get super-offended about this characterization even if its basically repeating their own stated experiences back to them, they have to try and spin it as something deeper and a core part of their being and that suggesting that they are ultimately drawn to the trappings of society's (typically fungible and arbitrary) presentation of femininity, devoid of the real material elements that actually make somebody the sex they are, is the worst possible thing you can say, even when its a basic extrapolation from their experiences as they've described them.

Very well put. It's one of the reasons these people try so hard to erase the word 'woman', because they want to pretend nobody knows what it means. It's very important to resist such things, by the way. It may seem extremely petty on the surface to squabble over such things but the consequences of stating that 'gender' (and in Olly's world that means also sex) is 'assigned at birth' are very dangerous. Not just in a medical sense (because so-called inclusive language is fundamentally designed to be confusing) but in a societal sense. People don't have a gender identity and their sex is not assigned by anyone. Keep Foucault out.

I'm actually somewhat interested in Olly's thoughts on transhumanism, although I suspect they will be very predictable as usual. I have a very faint hope he might touch on transracialism, since that might actually be an interesting philosophical topic, but that's just me being naïve I suppose. In Olly's world everyone fits into rigidly defined socially constructed identities, but it is possible to move from the male identity to the female one. Can someone move from white to black?
