Jesus do they want Russia to throw a missile or 30 at them? Because that's how it will happen. The Russian forces there are legitimate peacekeepers, and with them tied up in Ukraine, that only leaves so many options to deal with ceasefire violations.

If the Russians kick off a war against the Azeris it'll distract them from Ukraine. They'll let Armenia get clobbered again instead.

The handy guide is this: Any territorial outcome that doesn't at least leave the rest of Ukraine landlocked is a Russian defeat and a sub-Winter War tier outcome. Formalizing Donetsk and Lugansk as Russian or settling after Mariupol, a city that went over to the DNR without a shot fired in 2014, is a loss clear to anyone no matter how many layers of spin they're on.

Bringing the Ukrainian military to a point where those are feasible terms will be more difficult than taking the Black Sea coast. A scenario where Russia can neuter Ukraine militarily in that style is one where broader annexation or a puppet regime are also on the table.

They have a metric fuckload of missiles though. Worst case you just use up some older ones that were on the verge of decommissioning anyways.
