President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

As far as I know, this might be the first successful AT missile fucking an attack helo caught on video; by ramming it straight down his throat, with little/no deflection. That's definitely the textbook way to do it.
Wasn't there a really bizarre air to air kill of an Iraqi Helicopter by a US attack plane using a laser guided ground attack bomb? Not a missile. But yeah this is rather shocking. Exactly how much of Putin's foreign trade comes from arms sales? And how quickly has that number cratered to zero? I mean this isn't just a Russian Helicopter. This is Russia's most advanced state of the art Attack Helicopter.

So you're saying that Ukraine is equally at fault for possessing their own national identity and not surrendering to Russia? Because if they had there wouldn't be as much suffering and destruction as there is now. Is it not Ukraine's national interest to defend their borders from a neighboring invader? Or are you postulating that both parties are guilty of this conflict because they're individual countries who don't share a homogenized language and identity? Are you saying that Stalin and Lenin were right to abrogate the independence of Ukrainians by forcing them to speak Russian and taking their grain, forcing them to starve to death in the Holodomor? By the logic of nationalism being bad, Russia are liberators who seek to alleviate the curse of national identity from "Ukraine."
No, you're confusing Nationalism with Patriotism. There's nothing wrong with loving the country you're from. I love living in the United States and I'm sure you do too

But the moment you start thinking your nation is "better" than others and can bully them through might makes right is when patriotism goes too far and nationalism takes over.

It was turbo-nationalist cancer that got us dragged into both world wars and is in a close tie with Communism for most ass backwards murderous ideology man has ever conceived. Let's just pray it doesn't get us dragged into a third one

Yes, in Desert Storm, an F-15E Strike Eagle took out a hovering helicopter with a laser guided bomb - by mistake.

Czech Republic sends tanks, infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine

The Czech Republic has sent T-72 tanks and BVP-1 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine, a Czech defence source told Reuters on Tuesday, confirming a local media report.
Public broadcaster Czech Television initially reported the shipment, showing footage on Twitter of a train loaded with five tanks and five fighting vehicles. It said the shipment was a gift agreed with NATO allies.
The broadcaster said the information was confirmed by the head of the Czech lower house's European Affairs Committee Ondrej Benesik, who told Reuters he received the information from his Christian Democrat Party's expert on defence.

The source, from the Czech defence community, also confirmed that the tanks and fighting vehicles had been sent but declined to give any further details, citing security concerns.
Defence Minister Jana Cernochova told parliament she would not confirm or deny details of Czech aid to Ukraine.
"I will only assure you that the Czech Republic ... is helping Ukraine as much as it can and will continue to help by (supplying) military equipment, both light and heavy," Cernochova said.

A spokesperson for the Defence Ministry said the Czech Republic had sent military aid worth nearly 1 billion crowns ($45 million) to Ukraine since the beginning of the war on Feb. 24 but declined to give any further details.

Oh thank you for clearing up your stance. You were getting me confused for a second. I can agree with that.

It's old T-72M1's, but they're still tanks. Slap some Konkat-1 on them and you've got at least something that can slug it out successfully with the older T-72's the Russians have and will beat the everliving shit out of stuff like BMP's and BMD's.

Russia is calling what they're doing "patriotism", though. It's all semantics. You just have to look at what people say and do.

Given how high the turrets have been launching from those things, getting a shipment of T-72's would seem a mixed blessing. I can imagine most Ukrainian soldiers would take one look and consider walking instead. Russian soldiers would take one look and start running. Well I mean they would likely be on fire.

If you're planning on using them to dislodge infantry formations and actually using them correctly and with proper support, they'll perform just fine.

You know KMW's own technicians are all salivating at the idea of some of their Leo 2's being sent out to Ukraine to get proper, raw data from its performance against T-80s and various flavour of T-72.
Only major known issue with the Leo 2s have is the hull main gun ammunition rack is not in an armored compartment. Unlike the Americans, English, and Israelis who understood the possibility of something is going to completely penetrate the armor and hit the stowed ammunition.

Since I can't archive Facebook pages - here's a statement from a Ukrainian ombudsman on a recent prisoner exchange. It's a bit of a shitty translation but I guess it should do.

>Female prisoners were stripped naked in the presence of men, forced to squat, their hair was cut and they were constantly interrogated in an attempt to break their morale.

Russian niggers being niggers, I guess. I guess good thing that they were military, then again, it never stopped Russians from raping.

Not just any bomb but a fucking 2000lb paveway. Apparently it hit so hard it had punched all the way through the chopper before the fuze even detonated it

By mistake? From what I remember of the story it was a deliberate choice since they were struggling to get lock-on with radar for missiles.

Russian artillery in Luhansk hit a cistern with nitric acid (on the railway by the sound of it, was meant for some sort of factory), resulting massive explosion created a rust-colored cloud.
Luckily, wind carried it toward Russian positions.
These retards with artillery are like monkey with a grenade. This is all they're capable of as far as fighting is concerned.
Edit: Update, and they're now blaming it on Ukrainians

Most of the Russian equipment even with flawed loading and the lack of night vision, and patent lack of maintenance could have performed far better if Russia had decent officers. Kamil Galeev that poor quality army officers was a deliberate policy of Putin, his siloviki and courtiers who preferred not to have capable officers forming an alternative power center. Popular generals with political savvy were a feature of the early post Soviet years.

Hideo Suzuki the Japanese Ambassador to the Czech Republic recently posted to explain the Japanese claims:

Twitter thread stating they are in fact part of Hokkaido and the term 'Kuril islands' is Russian propaganda.

The tag is fair for once as they are claiming the Ukrainians murdered and defiled their own citizens and children to own Putin while they are winning. It's an incredible claim.

They published a longer statement on Telegram full of the 'muh Nazis' stuff.

On April 5, the US social media company Twitter resorted to a blatant act of censorship by concealing a post on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official account (https://twitter.com/mfa_russia/status/1510648066403143683) in English behind a warning that it violates the platform’s rules. The post covered the main points of the Russian Defence Ministry’s statement about the provocation in the Ukrainian town of Bucha and a link to the full text of the statement. The material was marked as "offensive" (supposedly violating "abusive behaviour"... with facts apparently) and the ability of Twitter users to share it has been drastically curtailed. This is the first time such a restriction has been placed on the Foreign Ministry’s verified account since it was created in 2011.

We regard this step as clear confirmation that Twitter as well as other US tech companies are direct participants in an unprecedented act of information aggression launched by Washington and its satellites, which is designed to shape international public opinion, creating a vastly distorted picture of events in Ukraine. Large-scale measures are being taken to conceal the horrendous crimes committed by the Kiev regime that is steeped in Nazi ideology. The fabrication of pretexts for ramping up political and sanctions pressure on Russia and flooding Ukraine with an endless supply of weapons continues unabated. Before it was censored, the post was seen by over two million users, mainly outside of Russia. Obviously, the widespread interest prompted Twitter executives to resort to these unscrupulous methods.

☝️ We demand that Twitter immediately restore access to this post. There can be no place for bias in the company’s content moderation in the future. Otherwise, it may acquire a reputation as an accomplice to the Kiev regime’s atrocities.

Now it might be completely blocked for others.

UKRAINE NAZI MURDERERS USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST PATRIOTIC PEOPLE'S DENAZIFICATION FORCE!!

Nitric acid is a reagent for manufacturing nitrated explosives e.g. TNT. It's also phenomenally dangerous as you can't see (unless it's in a very high concentration), smell or taste its fumes and you can get a lethal exposure before any warning symptoms develop. Excellent chemical weapon for insurgency use, though.

re: the Russian embassy in Ireland, it's not just fuel companies who're boycotting them. Bank of Ireland has suspended their bank accounts as well.

I've heard that either they thought it was still on the ground, trying to take off, or it stumbled into the bomb.

There are degrees of nationalism in which the ideology becomes more extreme. Civic, religious, ethnic and jingoism.

What you are describing is jingoism. The worst type of nationalism possible if you want cooperation with neighbor states.
