Driving supply trucks isn't a very high skill job, and theoretically isn't a high risk job either. If things had gone well for Russia, they'd have spent all their time driving around in rear areas safely behind the lines, and no one would have ever noticed or cared much if they did.

Judging by this map found in the twitter links to the video of the trenches that purports to show their locations, I'm going to go ahead and hazard a guess that people aren't growing vegetables in the areas of high radiation:

Remember, the exclusion zone is bigger than just the irradiated areas, it's the dangerous areas plus some of the surrounding area:

So there's likely going to be some areas that are perfectly safe. Plus some areas where you really don't want to be digging at all, much less digging trenches and camping in them.

Most of the containment soil were throwing off Beta Waves, which can be blocked by only a foot of just about any material. So the Soviet Government just put a bunch of soil over the contaminated soil and called it a day.

To this day there's still worries that excessive rain could cause some of that contaminated material to somehow end up in the drinking water, and fast moving vehicles do fuck things up by kicking up dust and dirt.

It's why building a trench there is so exceptional because you just made a pit that exposes the original soil, and so if you stand in it, you're surrounded with the radioactive soil. That's not to mention while you're digging, you're throwing up a bunch of radioactive dirt and dust that could easily end up in your lungs.

I doubt those guys are going to die of Acute Radiation Syndrome directly, but these guys easily cut their average expected lifespan by at least a decade doing this.
