It's really obvious that they were never trying to capture Kiev with that force, there was very little fighting around there, it's just what the western media was focusing on instead of the Donbas and Mariupol where the actual fighting was happen.
I mean, it's obvious to people who aren't spazzing out about Russia every 2 minutes
Pretty sure they'd have loved to scare Kiev into surrendering, so they sent enough troops in right quick to frighten the Kievbros, but not enough to do much else.
What surprised me is how they didn't try to capitalize on their blocking positions around Kiev to properly close off the city. They'd need more men for that, but they're only about a couple hours away in Belarus. Belarus may be trying to maintain its limited independence from this shitshow, but it hasn't spared them from any sanctions or CIA glowops to kill their president so idk. Besieging Kiev gives them extra negotiating leverage, if they wanted that. Probably an incredibly dumb idea to actually invade the place against entrenched defenders. Also might be interesting to see if Zelensky is still there (I assume his greenscreen videos, supposed meetings with visiting dignatories, are in Lvov or Poland). Maybe he isn't, and Russia realized it'd be futile to cut off a massive city whose government is safely elsewhere and doesn't care all that much about how many peons die.
For whatever reason, Russia is still trying to do this thing on the cheap with more or less the same army they went in with, which on paper is vastly outnumbered by the heroic Ukrainian supermen. No actual declaration of war, no general mobilization, no significant waves of reinforcements (that we've seen?) and no attempt to expand this year's conscription goals in case they need to backfill. That's a sign of either serene confidence or incredible hubris.
Russian leaders don't seem dumb to me, tho individual Russians can be dumb and their endemic corruption and laziness has cost them a lot. Putin and his sidekicks obviously know things we don't, and I don't think they can afford to lose this war now (Putin would be Saddamed), so they probably won't. Maybe that explains the sudden LOOK OVER HERE! MASSACRES! gayops on Ukraine's part - note that while Westerners are furiously masturbating over predictions of 6,000,000 dead Russians, nobody's talking about Ukie casualties, which by any sane calculation have got to be horrific.
