Paisley is pretty painful to look at, that's for sure. Everything about her is messed up. Just like someone said earlier, she can't hear, can't eat, can't sit up... she'll never get out of diapers or have any semblance of a normal life. She's always just lying there, stuck in that little body of hers that does nothing for her. As cruel as this may sound, this is what you get for not doing the right thing, which in their case should have been abortion. The mother says she gets daily hate from people who share the same sentiment. But is it hate, really? It's seeing things for what they are, which she conveniently interprets as hate, so people can feel sorry for her and give her ass pats. That's when her stubbornness and ignorance truly "shine".

I wonder what it would take for a "pro-lifer" to recognize this.

People with thanatophoric dysplasia have “profound mental retardation”. I’m putting that in quotes because that is what it is actually medically called. It means that they have an IQ of 20 or less. They are non-verbal. They cannot eat or swallow normally because of their anatomy, so must be on a feeding tube from birth to the rest of their life. They’ll never sit up. They’ll never walk. They cannot grasp anything with their hands. Their heads and brains are deformed - furthering their neurological issues.

I actually find it to be a blessing, that she’ll never be able to fully comprehend anything.

There is one special case where a man has normal intelligence and recently graduated from a good college with a degree in Journalism, but he is the first and only one so far to display no brain damage and have normal intelligence. All other cases of TD have shown profound mental retardation and neurological damage (like Samuel Mann and PrayersforPaisley).

Neil Peart lived 3 1/2 years with GBM, because he had a mutation that was treatable, and one report I read said they were able to keep him in what amounted to a holding pattern until about a week before he died.

I believe his tumor had MGMT promoter methylation, which is a mutation that silences, or "turns off" the MGMT gene. MGMT gives the instructions for making a protein called O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase, which helps repair damaged DNA. In the case of glioblastoma, this process can make the tumor cells highly resistant to a common class of chemotherapy drugs called the alkylating agents. These drugs work by damaging the DNA of tumor cells so they die. In tumors with a normal (unmethylated) MGMT gene, this damage can be repaired, rendering chemotherapy ineffective . Resistance to the alkylating agents is an important factor in why glioblastoma is so bad. MGMT methylated tumors appear to be more sensitive to radiation therapy as well, which is a key component of GBM treatment.

Patients with MGMT hypermethylation have longer overall survival, and basically all patients who survive longer than a year have MGMT methylated tumors. One study found that 95% of long term survivors had methylated tumors, compared to 36% in the control group. It's important to note, though, that "better" in the context of GBM is still grim, with most patients dying within 3 years regardless of MGMT status. The study I linked used 2.5 years as the cutoff for "long term" survivorship, and it's an overall survival statistic, meaning that patients could have still had refractory or recurrent disease, it just took longer to kill them. In another study I found, median survival for patients with methylated tumors was 25.5 versus 12.2 months for those with unmethylated tumors. Even if you're lucky, it's a shitty disease.

I got curious about her after I mentioned her the other day, so I did some poking around too. In these posts it seems like her dad is referring to the health issues that put her in the hospital; from what I can tell she's been in and out with aspiration pneumonia, pancreatitis, and other health problems on a fairly regular basis. He has claimed in other posts that she's regained some cognitive function, though it's hard to tell if that's accurate or if he's just indulging in wishful thinking like 95% of the other parents in this thread.

I check in with Eva and her crazy father occasionally, so when he talks about Eva being “better” he’s referring to her constantly yo-yoing back and forth into hospital with infections and complications, not the actual brain injury. Seems he’s given up on her being fully and miraculously healed by God.

I don’t think her brain is going to recover much more than it already has. It’s been a while since the accident. Poor kid.
