Brianna Wu / John Walker Flynt - "Biggest Victim of Gamergate," Failed Game Developer, Failed Congressional Candidate

“Many of us will go elsewhere.”

Where John? Where else is there?
John will reluctantly quit his PAC that's fighting to save democracy to form a team of cutting edge programming women to build a new and more superior Twitter where nobody can mansplain to John or block John or refuse to see John's tweets and Gamergate won't even be allowed to make accounts. Elon will cry into his pillow as his investment dries up and he can't even sell Twitter at a loss after John bests him once again.

Jake Alley keeps muttering about his brilliant ideas for a new twitter. Maybe he and Wu should team up to build the ultimate tranny social network. When Wu's brilliant programming expertise combines with the insights of the idea gnome, how could they possibly fail?

Wu has only had this pinball obsession for 9 months. In that time she's spent something in the region of 70K dollars on pinball tables. Incredible. That's added to the 70K Porsche Wu bought a few months back. I kinda wish politician Wu would come back so we'd have some insight in to how much Frank is earning these days, but that's got to be more than half of his pre-tax income Wu has spent on toys.

Where on earth are they putting them all? The house can't be that big (although if it has more than one bedroom, odds are they're not setting them aside for guests, and they'll certainly never be occupied by children).

Has John posted a preening photo of all his machines lined up as if they were in an arcade? If not, I have to wonder if he's already destroyed some of them.

They gutted the second kitchen that Wu has been using as an "office" a while back. She has them all lined up in there together with her crappy little half height arcade cabinets.

Based on how often he has to pull out his multimeter and schematics to "fix" them in Twitter photos I assume it's like his cars and they're effectively up on blocks within weeks of getting them.

I've been wondering about that, is the scampac not filing anything anymore?

FUCK billionaires right in the ASSHOLE, why should they have all that money to spend on useless SHIT while working-class folks like John Walker Flynt struggle daily to make ends meet?

John is not wasting money on toys, it's an INVESTMENT you fucking piece of shit.

Time for some fact-checking.

The Tron pinball machine that John mentions was first produced back in 2011, at an MSRP of $5699 (price isn't listed on the website anymore, found it through the Internet Archive). It had a more expensive limited edition, though I can't find the price on that. Judging from other machines in Stern's catalog, it does seem to add about $1k more to the price, so the $7k pricetag that John's quoting is probably for the LE, and probably somewhat close to accurate.

The issue with pricing pinball machines today is that they're a fairly limited market, so prices could vary substantially, and many resellers don't have their prices listed online. I'm not about to waste a lot of people's time with price inquiries, so I'll have to make do with what I've got. John's probably quoting figures from the Pinside website, which lists the base model as having a value from $6470-$7530, and the LE between $10640-$12360. I found two base models online, one for $4199 and one for $9200, so there's definitely a wide variance here. As with many things, the value is whatever someone is willing to pay.

But what about the dollar value of the machine? Say you bought a Tron machine in 2011 for retail price. That $5699 you spent is worth $7284.13 in 2022 dollars. That falls squarely in the middle of Pinside's estimated value range, so if you sell it today, you're barely breaking even. That's not an investment by any definition. At best, you could say it held its value, but if you had thrown that money in a sensible investment (or hell, bought a bunch of Bitcoin), you'd be much farther ahead today and be able to buy multiple pinball machines!

Oh, and also note that he stated his TMNT machine cost $8000, which means that (of course) he bought the premium version (MSRP $7699 on release, now it's up to $8999, likely due to supply/inflation issues). Pinside values it at $6840-$7960, but again, it all comes down to what people will pay you for it. Not like it really matters, because John is never going to actually sell any of his toys, so their value is effectively meaningless.

John is too stupid to understand basic economics, what a shocker.

Several tweets, this is the most recent I could find with all of his current machines (you're welcome for not posting the video of Frank dancing like a retard in front of them):

That's three from Stern Pinball (Jurassic Park, Godzilla, and TMNT), and a classic TNG machine. The Sterns are each $9000, possibly less when he bought them, but I'm going off of current prices. Pinside estimates a TNG machine to be between $4990-$5810. The Halloween machine comes from a different company, Spooky Pinball, and I'm going to assume he went with the most expensive version, which is also $9000. Finally, the Alien pinball machine he's drooling over like a xenomorph is $8600 standard, but we know he wants the $10700 limited edition.

Not including all other arcade machines he's been buying, John's spent over $40k on pinball machines alone, and is looking to drop another $10k soon. Absolutely fucking ridiculous.

Lined up against a bare wall, even blocking what looks like a basement window. Cramped together so tightly having more than one game in use at a time would be uncomfortable. No presentation, no pizzaz, all the charm of a warehouse. John can't even get man-caves right.

Fuck this "B.C" and A.D" bullshit, human history should be parametrised according to before or after Gamergate.

What great personal cost did the twitter safety and trust team incur? Is john talking about himself? Is he saying the trannies hired to set up policies that ruin a site actually suffered?
My absolute favourite thing about this is the arrogance that he is one of the "smart" people, and that these platforms need people like John to survive, when all he does is brag about spending his money on useless shit and complain.

That said, I think elon buying twitter is retarded. The site is shit and runs like shit, he should just hire people to make an alternative, since it would cost a fraction of the price.

Yes, you have in fact mentioned all your "backchannel" fights. It's very convenient because you don't have to prove that you actually did anything. And if it's backchannel, what "great personal cost" are you talking about? Did it prevent you from buying yet another porsche or pinball game?

Speaking of pinball, most people don't have the space to store multiple dust-collectors, as someone else hinted at. I suppose he is also implying everyone should own mcmansions with 10 car garages for all their "investments." Pretty hypocritical that he would justify his spending on large toys as investments while shitting on people for investing in real estate. Then again, with his mindset it's only bad to own multiple houses if you let someone else use them. Having them sit unused and decaying is a-ok.

The reselling market for pinball machines is fucked. The biggest cost is the space, electricity, and maintenance, you can find a ton of working or almost-working machines for "free", as long as you pick them up. Because collectors can't get rid of them fast enough, because shipping is such a hassle and is often limited to a geographic area.

I found one limited edition Tron Legacy machine for $5,200, and that's after being fully-refurbished by a professional machine retailer and includes a one-year warranty. A quick search of pinball machines on craigstlist (in the Boston area) all has everyone asking for half that or less for "working condition" machines, but they always have to be picked up

On a recent trip to Las Vegas I visited the wonderful Pinball Hall of Fame, and while it's definitely a good time, it's also legitimately a museum. One thing I learned there is that maintaining pinball machines is expensive, time-consuming, and labor intensive ... only the first of which interests John at all. I predict all of these machines will be junk within five years.

As noted above, the "public town square" theory means that Twitter cannot place content restrictions on people without violating the First Amendment. This seems to go against John's whining that Elon would pare back the rules.
I THINK it might (grain of salt) be more the CA (that's where twitter is HQ'd and the jurisdiction the ToS say they are operating under) state constitution AFFIRMATIVE right of free speech.
The Pruneyard case was sate con IIRC
The resident legal eagles could probably shed some light

Say didn't John say he had to "delete twitter" a couple of weeks ago b/c of "toxicity" sounds like it ain't working out so well the way it is.
Maybe allowing a little more free speech will make it more consensus building and less outrage baiting (like people quote tweeting to get echo chamber ass pats)
like John was wishing for

Plot twist: the girl was not a girl but a man in his mid-30s named John Walker Flynt. I guess it was a really short audiobook, given that you were able to squeeze it in the middle of a 21 hour work day.

An eleven-hour audiobook, so it's certainly doable in a day. Though, judging from the reviews, it's a bad novel full of stereotypes and boring meandering fight scenes. Sounds like it's right up John's alley!
