Aren't there also more homebirths in the UK because the midwives have actual nursing training? I recall someone from bongland early ITT talking about how in the UK you can opt for a homebirth with a midwife as long as the baby isn't in the wrong position/etc.In the UK it's a legitimate nursing profession yes, totally different from most US Midwives. I knew someone who one day decided to become a Midwife, signed up for an online course, passed it and started their apprenticeship, within a year they were out practicing on their own. My state just took a step back, previously Midwives had to be licensed nurses who were also certified midwives. Now they can just be certified Midwives with no nursing degree. The reasoning was that the nurse midwives (similar to the ones in the UK) wouldn't do homebirths for safety reasons of course.
I'm not a huge fan of the government regulating things, but the lack of regulation with who can call themselves a midwife in the US is a disaster.
