There's a bit of a scandal happening in church circles right now as people are actually getting backlash for trawling blogs for sex assaults they can use against their ideological opponents. One example was dropped on Palm Sunday to try to influence the upcoming Southern Baptist Convention presidential election. They took an article that a woman wrote a few years ago about how her marriage was saved after a period of early verbal abuse when a pastor counseled the couple through it, but they are now making it out like she's an abuse apologist and her husband is a monster, all because he supports a conservative candidate for SBC president. (Links for context: here, here, here) Nasty stuff, but pretty uniformly derided in the comments. There's a lot of articles with stuff that's very speciously sourced (like this charge against John Ortberg) or blatantly taken out of context, using stories from people who don't consider themselves victims to cast their loved ones as abusers.

A lot of what passes for "reporting" in Christian media is just opposition research that they're trying to cast as "holding people accountable," but I've seen a lot of backlash from both progressive and conservative Christians in the past few weeks, which surprises me. Bad reporters have crossed one too many lines. They're not going to touch this Sabaah story, and if they do, they'll get deservedly torched. Innocent people are getting damaged by this method of accountability, and it's no longer sufficient to say you're doing it on behalf of victims.

No, that investigation was about her brother, his contacts with minors at church, and what leadership (their dad) knew and when. They couldn't find anyone who said he had had inappropriate interactions with children, despite admitting to pedophilic thoughts.

This is a woman at Ortberg's former church who claimed John Ortberg raped her when she was a minor and that the exact people who covered it up were all the people who were accusing the other pastor of sexual harassment, and they told this woman that they were just making it all up and bullied her and that's why we shouldn't listen to them about this unrelated assault accusation because they are the ones who tried to sex-traffick her! The only other thing that maybe makes a little sense (other than losing the card) is that he fergot that he has to get a new card every 10 years if he's a permanent resident - and, oopsie, he's back in Terf Island with an expired GC. I wouldn't be surprised if he's filing for a boarding foil so he can get back to the States (it takes a week or two to process, still would need to do the regular renewal ASAP when he gets back.)

Generally, if Joe would have stayed in Burgerland with an expired card, he wouldn't be inconvenienced too much. It has no effect on permanent resident status, so he would be able to live life like he usually does. He could always leave Burgerland with an expired card. Getting back in, however, would be a PITA. I don't know what the fine would be now if he showed up at Customs with an expired card, but it ain't cheap. If he got a cranky passport officer, they might even tell him to GTFO, and there would be nothing Joe could do about it.

Now, as far as his name - makes me wonder if his British passport/other official documentation is still in his "deadname". Immigration likes to have all the documentation match up with the old country (whatever it is) as much as possible, to keep out da trash (so to speak - don't want to inadvertently let in a war criminal or a sheep pimp because of spelling changes/other alphabets that aren't the one we use here.) He might have to change that first in Terf Island before Immigration will change it over to Grace here.

They let it slide a bit, say, if a woman gets married and has a different last name than what is on her ID back home, as long as the other stuff matches. Considering how charming and lovely Joe is, however, I can't see Immigration bureaucrats cutting him much slack without all the proper forms.

Here’s a summary about some of this bucket o’ crazy.

She was writing this post in 2018 because there was a big sex scandal at Willow Creek Church that got tons of press. The quite famous pastor there Bill Hybel was outed as being a creepy predator that had used his position to cop feels and get laid by women in the upper echelons of his church for years. (He was like the Weinstein of the Liberal-Christian sphere. A dozen or more women came forward to details his predatory behavior, everything from grabbing tits to demanding blow jobs. All the accusers seemed to be women that were employees at his church.)

Willow Creek isn’t the typical Trump loving, right leaning Christian Church, but the more educated, liberal Christian wing of Christianity. It’s also where Mallory’s father worked for years until being hired to lead his own congregation at Menlo Park. Willow Creek was a well regarded training ground for educated theologians for upscale congregations.

The really bizarre thing about this woman’s blog is that she isn’t accusing Bill Hybel of raping her or calling her a dirty whore, like almost everyone else she’s ever met. Nope, she’s full of praise for how wonderful Hybel was and he was perfectly saintly to her. Instead she is accusing Hybel’s accusers and critics of raping her. (John Ortberg took a public stance against Hybel and Nancy Beach was one of Hybel’s primary accusers. She’s stating that Hybel’s accusers are rapists, not Hybel, and that Hybel is a wonderful guy.

In 2018 I’m sure everyone thought this person was hired to help Hybel smear his accusers and critics.

Even a brief perusal on the blog shows this is a very disturbed woman. It looks like she bounced around several colleges pursuing degrees in theater costumes, literature, theater, etc...over a decades or more but her psychiatric issues constantly derail her. She offhandedly mentions regular psychiatric inpatient hospital stays, suicide attempts, suicide threats, paranoia about every human she’s ever known secretly being an enemy and thinking terrible thoughts about her, lots of different treating psychiatrists, etc...

She also mentions she had to get gastric sleeve bypass surgery this year so she is also morbidly obese. It sounds like she’s a very mentally ill woman living on disability, lives with her mom, likes to read, really likes Jane Austen and is profoundly disturbed.

I definitely think Mallory and Joe should let her move into their apartment and support her.

When Mallory first posted the link to her story it got some immediate traction because the headline was so salacious - it point blanks says her dad is a rapist. Finally the proof these sob sisters had been desperate to find, that Ortberg was truly a vile, evil predator of the highest order.

Just a few of the worst shitbags involved in the Menlo Park drama, like Mallory, posted the link to this garbage even though it’s entirely without merit. A few commenters even tried to pretend they believed it for a day or two and then it just fades away into the ether without comment.

There isn’t any statue of limitations for sexual assault in Illinois so if these hucksters actually thought this woman was violently raped by Ortberg why aren’t they demanding he be arrested? It’s crickets, but nice to have such a salacious accusation to leave up and give the impression that Ortberg is guilty of something far worse than bad judgement.
