Thank you for finding these! The car in the picture doesn’t quite seem match the one on Amazon, but after scouring Walmart, Amazon, and Target, I cannot find a single pink car that costs below $200! Most are in the upper $200 to $500 range.

The short answer is that there are rules regarding who is eligible to claim the child tax credit (CTC) and what constitutes a "qualifying child", but it's possible for a grandparent to claim the credit for a grandchild which in this case would preclude Shameka from claiming it herself if her mother claimed it.

Shameka saying she doesn't know how claim the credit sounds like an excuse, but it's possible that someone who self-prepares their return might not necessarily know how to claim the CTC or what documentation is required. This is why decent, reputable tax professionals/preparers are important during this time of year in the US.

Also, any preparer who files a return claiming the CTC has to fill out and include due diligence paperwork with the return that validates that the taxpayer is in fact eligible for the CTC and that certain questions regarding the eligibility for it have been asked, answered, and documented satisfactorily.

Because of this requirement, I can easily see grifters belieiving it's not worth the hassle even though it is worth it for anyone who is legitimately eligible for the CTC and has the necessary paperwork to prove it should the IRS review or examine the return.
