Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

"The push to force workers into the office is, and always has been a scam. A complete fucking scam that only benefits the landlords renting office space and control freak executives who want to completely dominate an employee's time. The very fact workers are expected to drive to an office, with travel time uncompensated, while paying for their own fuel to get there, is one of the most stunning grifts capitalism has pulled" - On to Jim talking point no. 2. Interesting hearing this as someone who actually does want to spend some time in the office again rather than at home. Might be because I don't work/commute in a place like London, but then again, Jim doesn't either.
Its interesting to hear this at least with the context of video game development because if there was any kind of job in an office setting that would require people being there in person it'd be game dev surely? Its far harder to manage large teams remotely and specialist software is regularly used so its the kind of thing you'd want to in person to do.

"Modelling" his "Something Something Capitalism Bad" t-shirt (available soon at his merch store).

The merch store that doesn't even have a disclaimer anywhere about ethically sourcing shirts, or anything about sourcing at all. I bet he gets them from some Bangladeshi sweatshop.

No ideology is dumber or more contradictory than troon communism. Just nothing but hypocrisy, every time.
At $18 a shirt its surely going to be from the lowest quality sweatshop money can afford.

I got through the opening monologue and that was it

So he's suddenly happy about being in the UK despite the tranny genocide?

And also, I'm probably late, but did he also say "his husband?"
It's the NHS, dude is happy taking off it despite his taxes not going into it. If he truly cared about it he would have been paying UK taxes while he was in America

To be fair it was much easier/cheaper to get to work in the gulags when you also ate, slept and lived there, because you couldn't leave unless you dropped dead. Stalin would even comp you your train journey out there with the rest of your comrades.

What can I say, when the man's right he's right.
Eh, at least in gaming industry I know of a few places which scrapped some unneeded offices over the course of Covid if the lease came up and are sticking to working from home forever for many positions other than weekly in person meetings for certain discussions. Why? Because it drops costs, and therefore was more profitable. The people who have to go to the office are now people who are high enough where they got their own offices anyways, those who they want to keep an eye on their hours worked, and the tech monkeys. Getting rid of the cubicals and requiring the rank and file have home offices, when potentially not having homes large enough to do so while having kids, was just more profitable.

Meanwhile those pushing for office returns are generally trying to get value out of recent renovations and ongoing leases.

Notice something? The reason to not bring people back is money related. I have also seen a good number of studios giving employees the choice, as coming to work means they have a dedicated work area which might make them be more productive. Productivity makes you more financially valuable to a company. I'll also stress I've only seen salary permitted to continue at home.

Activision-Blizzard happened to have done a lot of renovations and new office expansions around 2018-2020. Something done for tax reasons. They need to justify those things now. Bringing people into the office is financial. Letting them stay home would be the same. Nothing deeper than that.

I have no doubt the choice to bring employees back or keep them at home is money-related, because everything in business is money-related, because that's why businesses exist.

I just found it to be an even stupider reach than usual for Jim to use employees having to travel to work as a chance to take a shot at Capitalism, as though under any other system you wouldn't still be responsible for your own travel (psst, hey Jim: you know you still have to buy train tickets when it's the government running them, right? Socialism isn't free, either, dickhead.)

I particularly love his insinuation that people should be paid for the time they spend travelling, I'm sure people would love if plumbers and other tradesmen started charging their hourly rate for the time they spent getting to you. "Hi, I got stuck in traffic, so your bill is gonna be an extra $500 dollars. Cool? Cool, let's get started."

He will now have to cope about how covid didnt do anything to him because he was "lucky" and we should all definitely still be super scared and obedient.

He has the latest variant that's maybe a step above the seasonal flu at best. If it were serious, his fat ass would be in the hospital since obesity alone makes that three times more likely. Between that and the half dozen comorbidities that Jim has, this just shows how toothless COVID has become at this point.

No ideology is dumber or more contradictory than troon communism. Just nothing but hypocrisy, every time.

It's a great group to grift off because even if anyone points out that you're basically in capitalism selling them stupid shirts or other crap they'll gladly rush to your defense and buy even more shit from you.

At $18 a shirt its surely going to be from the lowest quality sweatshop money can afford.

Probably so awful that the little brown children in the shops wish they could be sent off to a diamond mine in Africa.

While I get your sentiment, this is actually the case for certain industries, including my own. Billable hours include the time spent at the airport, riding the plane, and travel to/from the airport to living accommodations. This is done to make travel more attractive to the employees assigned to do it, since business travel is a hassle for normies. Plumbers don't directly charge customers for time spent in traffic but that expense is passed indirectly to the customers since plumbers and other tradesmen are still on the clock while waiting in traffic.

My theory on why Jim is constantly able to find opportunities to kvetch about muh capitalism for game devs is probably because it's a high supply, low demand industry. Lots of people are lining up to get a shot at their "dream job" of being a game dev. This is probably why they tolerate crunch, overtime, and self-funded travel more than other industries.

If I gave a single fuck about the coof, I might say that it's Jim's own fault he caught it and it's hypocritical of him to talk about WFH after moving across the world for free healthcare/sex iN tHe mIDle oF a pAnDEmiC.

He makes 6 figures per year, why is he even worried about medical bills? Is he too fat to get insurance in the US?

Sterling believes that there's going to be violence because of "Groomer" rhetoric.

Maybe, juuuuuuust maybe... he should say trans people should stop being groomers?

Trans people specifically. Popular trans people especially. It's the T hiding behind the LGB when they know damn well they're the ones bringing it upon them. The "recent frenzy" is entirely of the transgender communities making. Because there's been a "recent frenzy" of openly convincing children to be transgender online like it's a high school clique, except all Emo's ever harmed were themselves. They want more trans people to exist. More trans people means more people for their personal army of permanently online retards. Gay people didn't get anywhere near this because it's a strict "Oh I don't like guys" while being trans changes definitions and criteria about as much as Jim Sterling changes the grease trap is his tin-foil wrestling underwear.

Gay people would be slowly accused less of trying to groom other people into being gay because people eventually learned being gay isn't a choice. Trans people have been trying their hardest to hide the fact that being trans to them IS a choice. An "identity", something fluid and to be explored. You can't "explore" being gay beyond the bedroom. You quickly learn if you are or you aren't.

I haven't seen massive groups of gay people openly try to convince and gaslight vulnerable kids into being gay en masse and also be openly celebrated for it. When gay people try to groom others, they end up like that choir that sang "We'll Convert Your Children" and get shit blasted at them from most sides. Trans people try and convince children to take the pink pill and destroy their bodies and minds for this fetishistic view of the opposite sex and it's openly celebrated.

If LGBT hate crimes are on the rise because of this rhetoric, it's people like Jim's fault and their inability to say, at the absolute bare minimum, "maybe we shouldn't be openly trying to convince children they're transgender and convince them to seek professional help instead". But that goes against the whole feeling of rebelling against the system. Because without the system to rebel against, "Stephanie Sterling" would just be sad ol' Jimbo because that's the entire reason he's done it. From DAY FUCKING ONE he boasted how "punk" it was.

Crossover I wasn't expecting (someone else archive because I'm a lazy re7ard)

TL;DW - Rich likes the Souls games. Thinks Jim is an idiot and can't seperate accessability and difficulty. "Misgenders" Jim constantly.

I watched the video and there’s some glaring lack of foresight from Jim - If game developers all work from home how would this not eventually lead to game companies just hiring people from poorer countries who would work for less and never instigate any me too sort of drama?

That seems the logical conclusion if game developers are all greedy and don’t care about anything but profits like he’s always going on about.

I like how these insecure non-people's facade of caring about the working class always fades as soon as it conflicts with their primary motive of undermining anyone with a spine who reminds them of the fact they don't have one (ok, Jim isn't physically spineless yet, but he's on his way).

His excuses are bullshit, the reason Jim and other twitterites don't like the idea of people physically being together or working together has nothing to do with travel being a scam, it has nothing to do with covid, it's because these people are corporate weasels and people interacting in real life terrifies them, since it allows people to form physical real life relationships where they can interact and share unmoderated opinions often including non-sexual relationships between males, they can form heterosexual couples that could lead to children they might even consider not pumping full of puberty blockers just because they used a pink crayon one time...

If people are allowed to interact in real life, and if it gets serious enough, they could even start finding ways to help each other out with skills and resources to severely reduce their dependence on the system and find a sense of fulfillment and belonging outside of hedonism and a savage obsession with power and control, and Jim is a pathetic fucking waste of air who's crippled and castrated himself to guarantee himself a position as a pet for the elite class, as is tradition for eunuchs, so he needs to make sure everyone is subservient to his overlords, because then that means they're subservient to him.

For about the last 20 or so years the main places people could still make uncontrolled social connections has been through school and work. Public schools and colleges have already...been addressed. That means people like Jim just see one more kink to work out.

That implies they're not doing it already lol. Outsourcing (or "insourcing" with h1bs) is killing tech jobs, even in game development.

That's pretty interesting, I'd heard of company cars before and I know employers will often comp travel/accommodation if they're sending you to a conference or something, but Jim's suggestion everyone should get paid for the daily commute into the office is retarded, and would be a logistical nightmare because not everyone travels the same distance so you're gonna end up with some employees getting paid way more just because they live further away, rather than everyone being paid the same for the set hours they're actually at work doing their job.

I don't know that I'd even give Jim that much credit. I think he bitches about the games industry because it's the only type of work he has even tangential knowledge about since he hasn't held a real job for over a decade. The games industry does seem like a pretty shitty industry to work in, from an outsider's perspective, but that's why I wouldn't wanna work there. They're not chained to their desks, if it sucks so bad and nothing's changing go work somewhere else.

AFAIK some countries do require or encourage businesses to give their employees a fuel/public transportation allowance.

I don't know of any place paying for the time spent commuting, though. If the commute is killing you, find another job.
